Fuji - it's not a single incident - clearly we are not reading the same thing as multiply managers and HR was involved (as well as multiple attempts to get an exception). Anyway let's agree to disagree.
It's a single incident. Nothing wrong at all with asking you manager a question about the dress code. The ONLY thing that could be called an incident is submitting the petition.

(Caveated again by we only have one side of the story.)

Forced labour for no pay sure sounds like slavery to me
Forced? They can quit whenever they want.

The management did the right thing. Come to work dressed appropriately, do the work you're given, or work somewhere else.

It's akin to a recent immigrant to Canada pleading to change some of the laws of the land.

A company will pay what it takes to get the skills they need to keep the company humming along.
Which is precisely what I said. If a company can keep humming along while paying you 20K less, it will. It ain't rocket science, dammit. It's the mechanics of capitalism. They will pay the minimum required to get the job done. Not a fucking penny more.

If you have a good job they will pay a premium to try and attract the best.

Nobody forces people to work for free. That goes for internships or volunteer work. In fact, probably only 1% of jobs out there don't pay anything.... which is odd since the government states minimum wage pay but somehow certain jobs are exempt from that..... but that's another issue.

If someone is desperate enough to take a $0 paying job because no other place out there wants to hire them and pay them $10/hr, they should look in the mirror and see the person at fault.

WRONG fuji

The idiot intern did NOT ask a question about the dress code, the idiot QUESTIONED the dress code.

If you need me to explain the difference, let me know.

I now see your POV FAST so I change my POV and agree with you half way

They are interns working for free and are allowed to make mistakes, indeed expected to make mistakes, and that is why they work for free

They should be reprimanded, not humiliated and confused and have their esteem destroyed by firing unless their is more intransigence on their part than I am reading into this story

A well written request for review of policy is not a demand for policy change , unless I am missing something here

As interns, they should have asked to have the policy explained to them not requested a change in a working environment they know nothing about

They made a mistake

You need to reread the thread, trying to comprehend it.

There is only one instance of the dress code being questioned. I also don't see it as idiotic to ask questions. I see it as idiotic to be unable to answer questions.

The only people who need to be reprimanded here are those who are unable to explain the culture while purporting to be leaders of it.

No, they did not ask a question, they requested a change which is a naïve thing for a newbie to do in a work environment they know nothing about but they do not deserve to be fired IMHO

I think there is more to this story such as managements version of events
