I used to work in Colombia and Brazil and often helped colleagues shop for emeralds. Main thing is that unless you are looking at them regularly and often in comparison across several, as an amateur, you wont be able to tell the difference between a high and lower quality emerald. I would suggest you find someone or a store with a very high reputation to help you select your stone(s). A very high quality emerald is amazing to look at, but most people wouldn't have seen such a thing, so my experience is that most stores won't even bring out the highest quality stones, as most shoppers wouldn't appreciate them, nor pay for them.
