Being new to the hobby and trying to arrange my first visits with independent SPs via email, it strikes me that there is potential for a lot of personal info being flung around in open cyberspace. Of course it's impossible to avoid all risk and if one chooses to sample the industry's offerings, one should consider the possible consequences. The problem is that no matter how careful I am, I am 100 per cent dependent on the SP's info management practices.
I was wondering if there is any demand from clients for SPs to provide data retention policies and/or offer encrypted email? I'm not talking about hiding one's identity from the SP, but protecting the privacy of both parties when making plans. Email accounts are ridiculously easy to hack, and you have to assume that everyone with whom you correspond uses a weak password for their email and cellphone and never empties their inbox. On top of that, it is likely that every email that passes through a US (and probably Canadian) server ends up being permanently stored on an NSA computer.
For example, PGP encryption is quite easy, free, and still secure (as far as we know), and SPs could post their public key on their website. Kind of nerdy and inconvenient but it would help everyone's privacy and safety. I think it would be a good business move, personally.
Anyway, I'm interested in the community's opinion.
