Anyone observing Earth Hour by turning off your lights from 8:30-9:30pm Saturday?

It's funny how some people will observe it now, and then in the summer have their house/apartment like a freezer...and have to wear a sweater! They keep their thermostat at a normal 21-22 during the winter, but then put it to like 17-18 in the summer!

Some people who rent will leave their tv on, their lights on, when they are at work because they don't pay for hydro...it's sickening.

I'm not a tree hugger by any means, but some people just abuse these types of services to no end.

I don't partake in feel good gestures that are completely and utterly useless. I fully support efforts to reduce energy use and making our houses more energy efficient, but events such as Earth Hour are one of the main things wrong with the environmental movement. Too many events to raise "awareness" and feel good gestures, rather than focusing on finding solutions and working with government and businesses to implement them.

Why not use that hour to take a look around your home or business for ways that you could reduce your energy use or make the place more energy efficient? That would be far more beneficial that spending the hour in the dark wanking over yourself for supposedly raising awareness and helping the environment.

It's the only hour of the year I turn on the outside Christmas lights

O

OnTheWayOut

I bought all new energy star appliances, put fluorescent bulbs all over the house and crap like that. I do my bit year round, not because a bunch of tree huggers says it's time to turn out the lights for a few minutes.

Unless the tree hugger is a gorgeous asian chick who can suck like a hoover (kinda like the one I saw tonight) the lights stay on and i may very well turn on the fluorescent porch lite to boot! And thanks to ref, I might just turn on my energy saving LED xmas lights too!

Nope... for a number of reasons...

  1. I will be out on a date with Mrs. CG- we have Anniversary plans.
  2. This being the case, my 3 teenagers will be home wasting power as usual. Not that they haven't been taught to turn off lights in rooms they aren't in or TV's they aren't watching, but because they are teenagers, and by definition are "wasteful/ not a care in the world/ you can't tell me what to do" individuals.
  3. Even if I were home, I wouldn't partake, for the simple reason that 1 hour out of 8,760 isn't going to make a bit of difference... not to mention the incredible strain on the power grid when everyone turns on all their stuff at the end of the hour
  4. Although I believe in being a responsible member of the human race, the reason for "observing Earth Hour" is politically motivated BS and I do not partake in such things.

There is now a counter movement - Edison Hour. they say global warming is a hoax and we should leave our lights on!

I am supporting Earth Hour BTW.

It's silly.

First off, OPG will not, nay, cannot scale back electricity production. The boilers will still be churning away.

Last year I went to a restaurant at that time and they had candles burning away everywhere. Thing is the candles take far more energy to make, cost more to burn, and create more Greenhouse Gases than any 100 watt bulb.

But whatever floats your boat.

I think I will just go with Ref's idea and turn on the xmas lights.

I try to conserve energy all year round, not because I want to save the planet, but because I want to save money to spend on other things. While I understand the idea behind the Earth Hour thing is to theoretically make us think about our energy usage, the cynical side of me just observes that for most people they do their Earth Hour and then go right back to the way they were 60 min. earlier, but somehow feeling they have done their part to "save the planet".

There are portable message boards on the Gardiner (around Jameson) advertising "Earth Day"

I found it funny that those generators were put out there by the City of Toronto (good use of taxpayer's dollars), fueled wtih gasoline to run till whenever.

Dummies.

I wont partake. I will carry on as tho a normal Saturday evening. I try to conserve and recycle as much as reasonably possible thorough out the year, so I figure that Earth Hour is every hour for me.
By shutting off your hydro for 1 hour will not do a thing. try to conserve energy as a normal routine , that's a realistic approach .

I'm all for energy conservation in general. No sense being wasteful. But for a symbolic thing like this? If I remember I will make a point of turning all my lights on for that hour.

I think the best way to enjoy and partake in this "Earth Hour" would be to book an appointment with a sweet lady for that time period and turn the lights off, and enjoy the company of a fine women in bed. :D

I will partake in Earth Hour , why not. Plus, I pay for my own electricity and I never use extra lights when not needed. Its just foolish, for two reasons. Save your money and save energy.

We are under darkness observing Earth Hour All Over Canada from 8.30 PM to 9.30 PM to safe guard our environment and to conserve some energy
for better positive use! But here i would like to further add that in Central & South East Asia there are some under developed countries, which are known as 3rd, world countries have to forcibly shut-down their electircal power 3/4 times a day due to lack of power & infrastructure problems.
The Govts. in those countries, which i would not like to name here, are corrupt upto their nose and not at all sincere to their country and theircitizens, but for their own selfish needs & their desires only! We are fortunate that we just have to shut-off our electircal power just for 1-hour in whole year of 365 days! Lord Bless Canada!

I have done my part 24/7/365 by;
-replacing my shiity builder's windows with ones that really save energy at a cost in the tens of thousands,
-replacing all my bulbs with CF wherever possible, despite the fact that they never give me the 6 years of service they promised me when they sold them to me,
-drive an ultra-low emissions fuel efficient car over a gas guzzling SUV and spend money to keep it in tune,
-set the thermostat lower than most in the winter and higherthan most in the summer, and open the windows for a good breeze in the summer,
-use water eficient shower heads,
-lower the thermostatic temperature of my hot water heater,
-commute to work with public transit.

Need I go on?

Fuck the politicaly motivated bull-shit for one hour out of 8736 hours a year and really do somethnig for the rest of the year.

Yes, and those third world countries that you mention continue to pollute to hell out of my world because they don't have pollution laws and they don't give a damned except to line the pockets of the big industrialists by making shoddy merchandise.
