Was thinking about getting on the Kindle bandwagon but then I noticed it's black and white only. Yet I see all kinds of "Kindle" books on Amazon that have colour pictures. Does Kindle not support colour pictures? Is there another reader that does? I'm not looking for a reader with b&w text only.

Kobo is pretty good also with a membership you get free books every month and discounts.
You can use your phone and an e-reader app like Aldiko.
Or buy a tablet if you want a larger format. Also a program Calibre can convert e-books back and forth from various formats.
I won't get into the ways to get free books or cracking kindle e-books.

The black and white ones are eInk which makes the battery last for weeks or months. If you get a color one the screen will be like on your phone and at best the battery will last a day or two of heavy use.

You can get the fire tablet from Amazon and read Kindle books on it or really any other tablet and install the Kindle app but just be aware of the trade-off you're making.

There's a Kindle app for smartphones too.
+1

No reason to have an actual e-reader unless you expect to be away from power for days.

You can just download an app to read books on any tablet. The whole point of the dreaded is that it's essentially electronic paper. The technology is to minimize / even remove eye strain from reading hours at a time. It works. I personally prefer the Kobo over the kindle.

There's also other reasons for an ereader than being away from power. Google it. Ereader over paper or tablet , hands down.

Honestly if you're an Android user and have half-way decent eyesight and a screen bigger than 4 inches you can just install the free CoolReader App and save yourself a fortune. It can read most e-formats without all the tricky legalities of DRM. So if you have a smartphone, a phablet, or a tablet just look into an app unless there's some content you really want to purchase from a particular proprietary provider... Good luck!

I have a Kobo Vox (older model) that's full colour and has a number of capabilities that one would find on an Android tablet.
I also have an iPad that can also be used as an e-reader.

Both are great in that you can borrow e-books from your local public library free of charge.

Than you're not looking for an ereader. You are looking for a tablet. Which will be horrible in direct sunlight. And way too bright in the dark. Not to mention that staring at a backlit screen for hours at close range is horrible for your eyes.

I just download the Kindle app from Amazon on either my desktop or my tablet. Once you interface with Amazon's Kindle site, you can sync all your Kindle books, regardless of when or how your purchased them.
