I have a movie I want to burn to DVD. It's over 7GB in size but my disc is only 4GB.

Are there greater capacity DVD discs?

There are

Dual layer discs, but they can be flakey as others have said, it seems the layer break gets screwed up or put in the wrong place. I've had success with DL discs, also had fails so its a crap shoot, the discs are pricier as well, probably 3 to 4 times the cost of a regu;ar dvd anyway.
A few options is to compress the original dvd,w hich is not something I would do if I wanted to keep a good copy,, the other option I suggest would be ;split the original dvd into 2 , just like the old days of VHS tapes, part way through the movuie you change discs.

DVDShrink, and also Nero Vision might be able to help you, if teh DVD is not copy protected. Try also DVD43 to unlock it, for legitimate abck-ups, of course.

Buy double layer DVDs. They cost more but have the capacity you want.

No. What happens is that the second layer has a higher error rate because it's behind the first layer. What you're describing sounds like a software/firmware problem. Nothing up to date should be mucking up DL.

Buy the DL when they're on sale, sometimes 25 for $25, instead of paying double or triple when you need them. I always stock up when I see a good price....I rarely pay full price.

Why not use DVDFab, it allows you to copy the who DVD without compression and then you can stip all the junk and that could bring the DVD down to 6GB. You should now have a copy of the movie only. Then you can use DVD Shrink to get it on a single disk with abou 75 - 80% compression.

That's what I usually do, with CloneDVD. Don't plan on backing up on DL discs until the prices come down more.
