That's the problem, if the drummer is off the rest of the band will sound like shit. Aerosmith do not want to go on stage and sound like addled old farts.
Joey Kramer set a very high standard, of course he has to prove he can still bring it. Bill Ward hasn't toured with Sabbath since 2013.

That's it in a nutshell. If your drummer is off, well then the whole band sounds like shit. I thing Aerosmith has a legitimate concern. It's not like they suddenly don't like him. He's been sick and hasn't had time to rehearse.

Joey Kramer needn't have taken this route, Bill Ward opted out of touring - he knew when it was time exit gracefully.

It sounds to me like the other guys have had enough of Kramer’s “emotional” problems and want him out.
Aerosmith did invite Kramer to rehearsals and closed sessions. He didn't show up to them. Partly flaked out and partly scared shitless he couldn't cut the mustard.
As the time line got to close to the Grammy's and their tribute, they couldn't take the chance to blow it so they had to get a new drummer for the show.
