is iphone in the lead now I really don't know what to buy next and I am due for a new phone...
The question is not who is in the lead but what phone has the most features and functions best suited to your needs. I've decided to go with the BlackBerry Z30 as I don't really care about millions of apps, but like the size of the screen, the expected battery life, Micro USB & Micro HDMI ports and from what many people say is the best, most intuitive touch screen keyboard available.

Here's a link which gives you specifications for 5 of the top smartphones.

Also ask your friends what they like and don't like about theirs. I particularly like to hear what people don't like about their device as that's sometimes more important than what they like. You don't want to be stuck with a device that doesn't do something very well that you use all the time. For example, if you like tons of apps, don't get the BlackBerry.

Happy hunting! :)

I agree but suggest this comparison that has ratings by actual users plus the prices: http://smartphones.findthebest.com/

If you like to keep a lot of music or other media - look at the memory requirements particularly for iPhone as once you choose the memory in iPhone - there is no way to upgrade it in the future. I had an iPhone and had to cut back on my apps because my media was taking up too much space and you cannot add memory to an iPhone.

If you are new to smartphones and money is no object - I would favour iPhone for you. Apple can be an overbearing big brother with little user flexibility (other than colours) but this can help new users get maximum enjoyment from their product without inadvertently getting lost in options. Apple screens the apps that you are allowed to use so it is almost impossible to get in trouble with a download. Just don't stiff yourself with memory on iPhone - you must live with your choice of memory.

If you are familiar with smart phones then I would seriously consider an Android - particularly the Galaxy series for larger screens, more diverse user options and ease of increasing memory & swapping out batteries (the battery life is rated top on the comparison chart for Galaxy but if you travel - a spare battery is great to have.)

With due respect to GB - BlackBerry heading for the toilet very fast so support (particularly from suppliers) is dropping also - I strongly suggest a pass.

My two cents. Good luck.

It really depends on what you do with your phone - if all you do is text, phone, surf any phone will do, if you do apps and media you should go with an iPhone. Blackberry is dead, windows phones are dead..... there are only two OS choices that make any sense.

I fixed your post.
Actually it's more like

It really depends on what you do with your phone - if all you do is text, phone, surf any phone will do, if you want viruses, carrier bloatware, a tower of babble OS update and a cheap plastic feel then go with a Galaxy S4. Blackberry is dead, windows phones are dead..... there are only two OS choices that make any sense, Android for dorks and those who can't afford a data plan and Apple.

I would wait until the Nexus 5 comes out this month to decide. The iPhone 5s is more of the same (i.e. incremental updates and fluff design/aesthetics changes).

So far once again iPhone is on top for bench marks speeds Leaving all others manufactures scratching there heads asking themselves how to make a phone as fast as iPhone. Maybe if samsung focus on making phones that matter rather than producing cheap plastic gimmicky phones with loaded dices when it comes to benchmark tests than they might be a contender. The thing I see with android that I don't like is there no uniformity with there operating system cause if you look at all the manufactures of android they tend to have different operating systems and the different features which is mainly gimmicks to sell there phones then you have Eco system and the sub Eco systems like Samsung App Store which is a copy of apple ecosystem Then you got jk shin with his presentations that's enough to make me not to want a android http://m.ibtimes.co.uk/iphone5s-fastest-smartphone-suggest-benchmarks-geekbench-iphone5-515226.html

If you want buy a 64 GB iPhone 5S outright, you're looking at over $1,000 or over $500 on a 2 year plan. I don't care how good it is, that's an outrageous amount for a smartphone. Besides it will probably be outdated as the iPhone 6 running on iOS 8 will likely be out by next summer.

Then there's this bug that's causing the 5S to crash and randomly reboot at twice the rate of older phones.

Yes, but with a high speed processor - it crashes faster than other smart phones ! The processing speed is a sad commentary. Does it get you a better display - no -S4 is much bigger with 20% better resolution. How about camera ? No S4 is ~ 40% more resolution with advanced features such as image stabilization. More communications interfaces ? - No S4 has both an IR blaster & NFC.

The only notable impact that the iPhone CPU has is that it burns the battery faster with field reports of 7 - 10 hours use. Not only does the s4 better the battery life with ~ 15 hours use but if required - you can switch a battery and continue while you 5S friends are hunting for a power outlet for a few hour of recharge.

If you are going to ignore functionality for a high speed processor - why not design an Apple tie clip - not any useful functions but the fastest processor in the business !

They must have seen you coming for that price. I paid no where near $500. As for the supposed crash, still waiting for the first crash ever and been using iPhones for years. It's a case of the stuff like this gets the headlines and little more.

Just quoting prices from Rogers and Bell.

I know it's anecdotal but I know several people who are getting random crashes and reboots with the new 5S. Also know people with 4 and 4S phones who are complaining of lagging and erratic behavior after upgraded to iOS 7. Doesn't mean they all do it but it is happening enough to cause some concern.

What iPhone and iOS do you have?

As generally more technical driven than loyalty demonstrated by Apple fans - I don't think Android phones will ever increase in value. Naturally as soon as I give my old iPhone away I see the following headline:

Out-of-date "vintage" iPhones are being sold on eBay for more than £1,000 as fanbois yearn for the good old days when Apple was golden.

Another factor for the Android/ Apple evaluation.
