People who downshift when they stop will use their clutch twice as often. It will wear out that much quicker, and clutches don't come cheap.Meesh said:Proper downshifting is very little strain on the transmission.
Also, you should ALWAYS be in the proper gear to accelerate should an emergency arise. If you're in neutral one of your options for accident avoidance is gone.
IMHO, driving instructors should teach you how to DRIVE...not save on brake pads.
I can't think of a situation where accelerating would avoid an emergency when you have to stop. You'd end up accelerating into the back of a stopped car or into intersecting traffic.
This instructor, a former race car driver, was just trying to save me a lot of money by burning brake pads instead of clutch plates.
