People who downshift when they stop will use their clutch twice as often. It will wear out that much quicker, and clutches don't come cheap.

I can't think of a situation where accelerating would avoid an emergency when you have to stop. You'd end up accelerating into the back of a stopped car or into intersecting traffic.

This instructor, a former race car driver, was just trying to save me a lot of money by burning brake pads instead of clutch plates.

I can think of several situations in which acceleration will avoid an accident. I've even used it a couple of times.

Most advanced or defensive driving instructors will tell you, you should always be in the correct gear to accelerate.

And figure the cost of a clutch versus being rear-ended.
