the hotels in the tourist area are going bankrupt as tourists are not visiting there.

Countries are either great or terrible for the most part due to the quality of the population.....One honest look at Haiti since its bloody beginning tell you what will happen to any area they descend in hordes upon....

DR risk is overplayed. Sousa is a very popular mongering destination. I've never felt unsafe, however I speak spanish and doing stupid things.

I was there in April of this yr and didn't see or hear any evidence of this but we were told to not go off the resort without 1 of there tour guides .

They will tell you this so they can charge you money to go with you. DR is at least as safe as Toronto. The last two summers when I visited Toronto I had my car broken into, and this is in the parking lot for the Hilton underground. This would never happen in DR, as they have security and police everywhere. Avoid the slums (just like you would anywhere else in the world), and there is no reason to be in fear.

The north coast of the Dominican Republic is hurting big time right now.

Puerto Plata (Playa Dorada), Sosua, and Cabarete are all different and all very slow now.

Playa Dorada is a gated complex of 14 resorts with a golf course, plaza with stores, restaurants, and bars, and a few of the resorts have a casino.
The complex has 2 guarded entrances and each resort has it's own security as well.
It is more family oriented and completely safe.
A couple of the clubs used to be pretty wild (Crazy Moon and Mangu) but they clamped down on the putas (hookers) so things really died down.
Puerto Plata is a 5 minute drive away and Cristals nightclub has the best chicas but it is not cheap by Dominican standard at $100 US for an onsite ST and $140 for takeout which can be LT or ST depending on you and the chica.
Bohem is another higher end place with nice chicas and similar prices.
Luz Maria used to be a great little club with some very nice talent and reasonable prices but it has been terrible in recent years but worth having a look to see what's up.
Several bars along the malecon (road by the sea) with chicas hanging around.

Sosua is a monger town but right now things are really slow and there is a crack down where any chica walking the strip alone may be arrested and fined 600 pesos.
The chicas are safe with a guy and in the clubs and they need to take a moto to get around.
The beach is dead now and the chicas are paranoid to stroll there looking to hook up now.
Slow business and police hassles has kept some nice chicas away but Sosua is still a fun place and La Passion Massage is a good place plus I hear there is another similar place opened up now on the same street (Pedro Clisante) a little closer to the strip.
You can get a 1 hour massage with BBBJ/HJ finish for 1300 pesos (around $35 US at 37:1) and on site full service is 2500 pesos or 2 hours in the jacuzzi room for 3500.
Overnight takeout varies depending on the time.
9:00 PM to 10:00 AM for 3500 pesos is a good deal and goes down to 2500 at midnight.

Freelancers are typically around 1500 for ST and 2500 for LT. Some are more and some are less.

Cabarete is more of a younger crowd and a wind surfing and kite boarding town and beach.
Very nice beach with some nice restaurants but quite expensive.
Much more expensive than Sosua plus many places add 26% taxes and fees to the bill not including tip.
I have only been a few times during the day and I'm not sure what the chica situation is but there are some around but it isn't a monger town like Sosua.
