It always amazes me how many people think the people protesting for ideas they disagree with are evil idiots and those protesting ideas they agree with are brilliant heroes, and can't understand that it's a matter of perspective.
As far as I'm concerned, any protest that deliberately and negatively impacts everyday people is counterproductive, whether that's a Native protest blocking a major highway or a trucker protest blocking a cross-border bridge. In fact, I told a freedom convoyer straight to his face that they fucked up when they decided to blockade the bridge. He thought it was great, and didn't understand that it would force the government's hand. He genuinely thought the government would capitulate!
While I personally supported the lockdowns as a way to prevent our health system from collapsing, that doesn't mean that those who didn't were wrong. Florida took a much different approach outside of the initial lockdown and you could definitely argue merits of that approach too, from kids being able to learn more effectively in the classroom to businesses being able to remain open rather than shutter their doors, just to name two. And from the stats I see, Florida's overall per capita death rate from COVID is akin to New York, one of the most aggressive states on lockdowns, and Rhode Island, which is the top mainland state for vaccinations. I'm also personally vaccinated, but got a very uncomfortable feeling with vaccine mandates that force people to chose between their livelihood or injecting a brand new vaccine that was pushed out under extraordinary pressure where the developers are almost entirely immune from legal ramifications of any emerging short-, mid- or long-term issues and have insane financial incentive to get the product out quick. Seems to me pretty reasonable to balk at such mandates, even if I personally accepted them.
My biggest issue with these truck drivers driving around isn't that they're flying the Canadian flag, it's that they're flying a flag that says "Fuck Trudeau" on them. While I regularly have that thought myself, flying such a message in public is crass and I don't approve of it.
