For almost a decade I worked alternating shifts - 7am to 7 pm then 7 pm to 7 am.

I always preferred the night shift - it was more fun. No bosses, more interesting patients and on a slow night - more stupidity.lol. But for the most part, it was just better not having everybody there getting in the way.

These days though I'm mostly days - I miss the days of less responsiblities.

Every round of shifts that I have, my last shift is a midnight shift.
Just part of the job and you learn certain strategies for dealing with them.
Plenty of sleep prior, don't plan anything big the day you finish the shift. No heavy meals during. Coffee at just the right time. Stuff like that.
I don't mind them so much as they are kind of a unique working enviroment but at the same time I am dragging my ass the next day for sure.

I worked all three shifts at one particular job: days, afternoons, and nights.

I found that afternoons were alright for the young crowd who liked to get up around noon, go to work, then party afterwards (10-11ish). But your day is pretty much shot. After a while you realize that you're not getting anything accomplished outside of working hours.

Days were for the older workers who didn't mind getting up early in order to get the work day over with. They'd have most of the afternoon and all evening off. This was my preferred shift (it was also the hardest to get).

Nights were good in that, as someone else mentioned, there was less work to do and fewer bosses around. One major downside was the boredom; if we ran out of work we'd either be sitting on our asses or sent home early. The other BIG problem is that is seriously fucks with your sleeping pattern. Once the weekend comes around you'll still be fucked over. The other downside is not being able to see friends/family who work "normal" shifts. I would say nights are for people who are less social and/or willing to work independently. Of course, night shifts often also have shift premiums.

Yea, I hear you. I work rotating shifts at my job. Nights, days, mornings and finishing on midnights. Really screws with your sleep cycles. It's interesting how the modern work place has changed so much.
I read how the biggest change brought by the invention of the lightbulb was that people were made to work later!!
Dam that Edison!!!

In university i worked nights at a factory one summer. Pros- shift premium;usually a few dollars an hour more, no bosses breathing down your neck, we used to sleep in the lunchroom, it's easier to do grocery shopping/banking/working out at a gym when you get off at 7am, no rush hour traffic
Cons- trying to sleep in the summer during the day-loud kids, can't go out at night (bars, etc.), the lack of sunlight eventually made me moody.

Midnights are okay for a while, especially if its a long shift every other night, so you still have some nights for other stuff. I wouldn't want to do it again unless for short term and a considerable cash influx.

I prefer mid-day or evening for the long haul. I find there's a big difference between getting to sleep by 6AM as compared to 7AM or later in terms of the quality of sleep. It's especially difficult to stay asleep all afternoon in the spring & summer when it's hard to keep the place dark and cool enough.

When I was driving, I really liked 11-7, 12-8 or 1-9, as I avoided rush hours and still had time to do other stuff around work. But now with the TTC, working 12-8 really means 10:30-10, so I prefer evenings after 3PM. At least I can do shopping, banking & stuff on the way to work, and still have a few hours after Midnight as well.

I've always been a Nighthawk...

for as long as I can remember. My Mom dubbed me Nighthawk at a very young age. I was working the midnight shift way back then at a local bakery. My next job when I got a bit older was at a sawmill were I worked shift work. I always like working the midnight shift better. When I left home and moved to Toronto I got a job handing out fliers for a MP downtown. Of course that was at night as well. So the nightlife was instilled in me at a very young age. Even in my present job... while it would be better for me I believe to work late afternoon, early evening (which I would love) my employer insists that I must be here 9-5. I have not given up though... someday I will convince them. Then I can sleep in and be here noon till 8pm instead if 9-5. That would make for one happy Nighthawk if it ever happens. :D
