...........break Eric Dickerson's single seaon rushing mark of 2,105 yds?

Peterson needs 293 total yds today at Houston and next week at home to Green Bay.

Can he do it?

If he does it's simply incredible after the knee surgery only 11 months ago.

I'm not willing to bet against him at this point. Especially since he's surprised me so much coming off a torn ACL/MCL. Total freak.

I'd give him about 20% chance of doing it.

What I'm really waiting for is for someone to go over 2,000 in 14 games a la Orenthal James. That still has to be considered the second best season ever by a running back.

The best? Jim Brown had 1863 in a 12 game season. That's over 150 yds/game. Actually 155.25. That would be 2484 over 16 games. OJ's would be 2292.

no chance now. Not in a meaningful game against the PACK
(although, the packers defense is weak)

To say no chance is obviously wrong, especially since AP got 210 the last time against the Packs and I'm sure they considered it meaningful.

I only give him about 5% but you never Know. I'm sure Vegas has odds and they'd be above zero (unless you know more than them).

I am amazed that Jim Brown's 1800+ for a 12 game schedule would extrpolate to nearly 2500 yards in a 16 game schedule. He must have been amazing. And OJ ran for 2003 in a 14 game season.

9 yards short?
9 yards?!?!?!?!?!
That's gotta hurt.
I don't care what AP says...... it's gotta hurt.
Meanwhile, Eric Dickerson is currently doing cartwheels in his living room.

He got 99.54% of the way there.

If I had his contract and endorsements, I could deal with some of that hurt.

Do numbers really matter these days? Its not like we can say Player A's rushing numbers are better than than Player B's rushing numbers ergo Player A had a better season than Player B. I think too much of an emphasis and too much attention paid to records these days. Hard to make historical comparisons due to a number of factors.

It's gotta hurt because he would have smashed the record had they not pulled him in the 4th quarter of Week 12 (I believe, among others) after he had already gained 160 yds.

Not to mention that they did not allow him to play for the last 3 or so Minnesota offensive series the week before...

I'm surprise he's not even mentioned as potential MVP. Against Minnesota, everyone expect him to run, everyone prepare for him to run yet he still has success and gets his team into the playoff.

The biggest factors would have to be..the strength of the opponents he went up against...was the opponent betted at defending the pass than the run?
How many were a 3-4 front seven as opposed to a 4-3....
Were more yards gained up the middle between the tackles or to the outside with help from good block T/E's

Turf or grass?
inside or outside?
Too many factors to say AP' is /was better than Dickerson..Brown..OJ...

I don't even have to look this up but you really should.

Jim Brown's record 1863 yards rushing in a single season occurred over the course of a 14 game schedule.

That said, O.J. Simpsons 2003 yards rushing in single season over the course of a 14 game schedule is still the greatest single season rushing record to this day.

Others come close but are still atleast 10 yds less rushing yards per game and atleast 140 less rushing yards per season on a comparative basis(14 games vs. 16 games.)

Another key factor in my mind is tackling. Sloppy tackling has reached epidemic levels at all levels of football in recent years. Players in general were more fundamentally sound in the past (blocking, tackling, catching, etc). Its probably not a majority but a significant amount of yardage that AP accumulated were YAC (yards after contact). My guess is there were a lot of missed tackles in there as well. Look AP is a beast and he is a violent runner and he would break tackles in any area but we cannot ignore the fact that tackling is very poor these days in football. That certainly helps AP's YAC numbers.

Indeed you are correct.

But just to muddle the issue, OJ had 40 more carries to gain those extra 140 yards. JB had a higher YPR average and also did not play in a league watered down by double the number of teams.

Regardless, both of them eclipse the Dick and AP.

the big defensive names of today.....Ray Ray....Suggs ..Urlacher..Harrison...Byron scott..Perrenial Pro-bowlers....all of them....CAN NOT wrap a runner up!!!!!!!big, strong, fast..but play with alligator Arms FFS....guys like Greene..Youngblood....Lambert..watch the tape on these guys...hit'em in the numbers wrap 'em up and take them down!!!!how many times did defenders bounce off AP..or any other RB..for that matter...and give up a first down..!!!or gain extra yards after the hit!!!
Pathetic just Pathetic!!!!

Terrific points Thumper. I'd also add that while AP has had a historic season there is more that goes into evaluating a running back beyond his running ability. Such as the running backs skills as a receiver out of the backfield and as a pass-protector (picking up the blitz). I'd argue a guy like Marshall Faulk was a more complete running back than Adrian Peterson.

Agreed. That was the point I was trying to make earlier that tackling just isnt good at all these days in football. In fact its as bad as its ever been. Part of it has to do with the ESPN highlight generation - kids growing up seeing the only way defensive players make the highlight reels is with big hits or creating turnovers rather than great tackles. And also the new rules in collective bargaining limit the amount of time for practices so coaches cant work with players as much as they used to in the past. For example two-a-days in training camp are a thing of the past.
