Unless you’re using torrent, watching iptv or trying to spoof a streaming service, there’s really no need to use a vpn if you’re never on public wifi. The exception being if you’re travelling in countries like China.

I’d be interested to hear what others think.

I do not use Dark Web, but I have been told to absolutely use a VPN on the Dark Web

The dark web is accessible through networks such as Tor ("The Onion Routing" project) that are created specifically for the dark web and can be identified by the domain ".onion". Tor browsers create encrypted entry points and pathways for the user, allowing their dark web searches and actions to be anonymous.

Dark Web is commonly used for illegal activities such as identity theif, drugs and guns.

Dark Web transactions use bitcoin and seems a risky proposition, at best, so I stay away

I have considered using a VPN while on the road so I could safely use a public net but , like you, I just avoid public internet

As I have never used a VPN, I am unaware of any downside, its cost is inexpensive, so I would also appreciate any VPN advice

I use IPVanish for downloading movie and tv show torrent files. Works great!

I don't use the Dark Web, so I don't know how effective it is for that...

I use Surfshark on all my devices. It’s remarkably cheap and easy to use.

When I travel and have to use either public or Hotel WIFI it’s much more secure. Also breaking Geo locks is a big plus for me. VPN allows me to use sites like SportsNet, TSN and GEM. Just connect to a Canadian server (Usually Toronto but it has several options) and they think I’m in Canada. This has also come in handy if I need to do any Canadian banking when I’m abroad.

When at home I use it for a more secure connection to some possibly sketchy streaming sites, and again the Geo locks advantage. I use things like BBC iPlayer which require a UK IP address. Spoofing your location also makes it easier use other countries versions of things like Google or YouTube, which can be very useful for research purposes.

Sometimes it is slower and some websites give you the "I'm not a robot" check when accessed via VPN (most notably some lyrics sites like genius.com).

Some websites restrict download attempts based on originating IP address -- (e.g., "your ip has already downloaded files from us today... wait for 60 minutes before your next download") since you're sharing an ip potentially with some other people, the chances of being throttled this way is a little higher.

But the benefits of geo-proxying and VPN tunneling outweigh those disadvantages in my opinion.

I use ExpressVPN. I use it mainly to get USA content on Netflix and sites like that :devilish:

For me, it's NORD VPN. The best virtual private network. I even download NORD VPN on my phone, tablet, laptop, and desktop because NORD VPN is so user friendly and helps me watch content that is blocked in Canada.

One time I asked to watch 3 region locked shows and they gave me three. I said, "Wow, three for free!" and the nice friendly NORD VPN dev laughed and said, "I'm going to call you 3-for-free!".

Now the NORD VPN greets me with "hey it's 3-for-free!" and tricks websites into thinking I'm in a different country than I actually am. It's such a fun and cool atmosphere with my NORD VPN, I use it at least 7 times a week for my daily browsing needs which include work, shitposting, school, and stalking my ex on facebook.

What a great NORD VPN.
