Do You Believe There Is An Afterlife??

There was another thread in this forum which discussed in part, whether or not there was an afterlife. While no one knows for sure, I'd like to share an experience that really got me thinking about it:

My father passed away a few years ago, and his funeral happened to be held on October 31st. That night of course, was Halloween. So, there I was at home, going through the motions of handing out candy to the trick or treaters that came to my door. A little later on, the doorbell rang again. I opened it and there were three teenage girls standing there. As I started handing out the chips, candy etc., one of the girls said "This was lying on your driveway" and handed me something. I looked at it, and it was some sort of religious medallion. On one side was a picture of an angel, and the other side had words inscribed upon it which read "Always with you". That freaked me out just a bit.

True story.

My own feeling here is that this is just a coincidence. I know its a real long shot that something like what you described could happen, but I still think its a coincidence.

Well, since I choose to believe that our experiences/memories influence how we are at any given time, and that memory is a physical thing stored in specific parts of the brain. Also given that these memory centers can be damaged and/or lost... it stands to reason in my mind that our memories (which in my belief is a major part of who we are in reference to the world around us) cannot be carried over beyond our bodies. THEREFORE, the afterlife, if any, will have nothing to do with me as the person I am this minute as I will have no concept of who I am/was. By that notion... the idea of eternal punishment for something that is no longer a part of me seems like a waste

Exceptions being if there is some metaphysical cloning going on that snatches enough data on me to recreate my afterlife self intact with the same "self"... then I would be screwed... but not even christianity claims to take your whole physical body into the next life after death.

Just my personal take on things... who knows, maybe I'll come up with something new next time.
