"By definition, fate is those outside forces establishing the preordained path of your life despite what you do. Given its definition, it should come as no surprise ‘fate’ comes from the Latin, fatum, meaning has been spoken."

Yes, I believe, to some extent, that there are forces outside our control that affect our lives.

Due to all the recent holidays and bad weather I found myself with some spare time on my hand so I decided to look up someone who I knew in Montreal. I was shocked to learn he had passed at age 56.

He seemed to have such bad luck in life. His father died (apparent suicide) when he was in his mid-20's. Then he was diagnosed with kidney disease. His sister donated one of her kidneys and a successful transplant was done. He got married just before turning 30 and had two kids. I never saw him smoke and he kept physically active (tennis, golf, baseball, hockey, etc.) and yet he died of lung cancer.

Just remember that life is short so don't sweat the small stuff.

I used to believe in fate but I think we chart our own course but luck plays the largest role of all..... good luck opens some paths and bad luck closes many.

Is it fate that kids are killed in a school shooting? Is it destiny that some guy won $70 million in the lottery? In my own opinion, using these examples kids killed are just horrible luck that they are in the path of an armed lunatic and the winner just got lucky and picked the right numbers.

I don't believe some other power led them to these fates, it just appears that way after the fact.

Luck. 157 people didn't miss the flight and are now dead.
I would think most flights are missing at least 1 traveller and probably more than half are without 2 or more. Almost every plane tragedy has people who missed the flight for one reason or another.

Update, according to a search on google..... on average, the number of people not turning up to flights is around 5 percent, but, in certain circumstances, that number can be up to 15 percent.
We hear from the lucky ones about divine intervention or whatever because we can't hear from the dead who would probably tell you fate is bullshit.

I might make an ant farm, but I certainly cannot make 2 ants meet at a specific time or place.

If there are lotteries, someone has to win. It there are shooting sprees, someone has to get shot. If there’s a job fair, someone has to get hired.

If it’s not you, it will be someone else.

Thanks. He was a friend in the sense that we played hockey and baseball together when I was still living in Montreal. Just a reminder that life is short and things happen over which one has no control.

I'm almost afraid to look up any more friends from back in the day.

This question always had me on the ropes, I like to think I believe in it but in the same breath I don't think I do - as you can see still on the ropes. My soul wants to believe in it though, but my brain says otherwise.

I do not believe in fate per se.

But I believe random coincidences can have big consequences in one's life.
I have experienced it both in a negative and in a positive way. Being at the right spot at the right time, or the opposite.

My sympathy, Darts. In the last 10 years I found out 3 former grade school classmates passed away(separately) in their 40's. We weren't close, but always had some laughs when we were together.
I have come to believe in luck more than fate.

The only magical force is Chuck Norris and he generally doesn't bother with us scrubs.

Old guy where I worked was always on his laptop. I asked him "what are you looking at?" He replied that he was looking up old friends from high school etc. I thought. "good idea. I should look up an old high school buddy when I get home" That was Sunday. Went home and went on facebook to look up my child hood friend from about age 13 or 14. Hadn't seen him since 1974 when I went back to the UK to visit. He was working for a big rock band and had toured the world with them and lived the lifestyle for a few years, living in LA and so on. Didn't give him a moment's thought till that Sunday.
Logged on to facebook and found him. Somebody had posted that he had just died Friday night. So after not thinking about him for almost 50 years, thought about him 48 hours after he died.

40's is quite young. What really shocked me is that I thought my late friend did everything right. He didn't smoke or drink (as far as I know). He wasn't obese. He kept in shape by playing tennis, baseball, hockey, etc.

Yes, he did suffered kidney disease but that was resolved with a kidney transplant while still in his late 20's. Yet, he died from lung cancer at 56.

Got another one. Went to Ireland. Got to Dublin and didn't know where to go. So an English guy at the bus stop said I should to to the west coast. Caught the train to Cork. Got there around closing time at the pub, so I got a room. Got up next morning and went to the bus station. Saw there were day trips to the Cliffs of Mohr. Spectacular. Always wanted to see them. Walked up to the ticket office and asked for a ticket. The lady said the bus had just left 5 minutes ago. I said no problem, never mind, I will take the next one. She said that was the last one of the season. The next one isn't for six months. Luck of the Irish? or Fate?
