Shades of grey?...

...has an escort ever filed a return listing herself as an escort? Would the CRA take such a return seriously? What would happen?

Excellent response, but I think the original question,"Do SPs pay taxes?" was merely rhetorical, likely stemming from some kind of passive aggressive personality disorder.
ANd the SPs don't suffer from this??!! Please.

For the most part, filing is done as a consultant or entertainer as already posted which just give more credibility to my post. We should be able to state our profession clearly and safely and yet we can‘t. So for those who are trying to be as professional and legal about it, they still have to go into the grey zone to make it. It is not right and until the laws, views and opinions of mainstream society and government change, it will stay this way.

I guess it is just alot easies to blame the escort and call her a drain on society then make the rest of the people open their eyes to a profession that is not going to die and has been around longer then our government was implemented.

I'm waiting for you....
This thread really erks me. What mordacity to assume such irresponsibility in escorts as PG did with his obviously rhetorical question. PLEASE! and some of these responses, just goes to show their inability to look beyond their own nose and narrow-minded thought processes. I file, I have always have, as a MPA, student, whatever job title I worked under. I also know more sex workers that do then don't. Believe it or not, we are not the dregs of society as some people try to paint us out to be.

You're not?! :D

Seriously though - we've all met a few truly wonderful ladies in our hobbying adventures. So it should be self-evident that it is possible to be an SP but still have dreams and goals, still have a strong moral centre, still have heaps of self-respect, still be humble and well-grounded, and still be an upstanding citizen in society.

Given all that, why should it be surprising that SPs pay their taxes? Declaring their income might be interesting but that doesn't preclude them from doing the right thing and paying up.

Having been there

I worked for darkside, CRA for a few years, computer tax audit specialist, and I have seen several ladies actual list their professional as "Paid Escort". Since there is no law against being an escort, you charge for the time not the substance, CRA has no issue with this. Where I did see people go astray mainly happened because of GST, they like their pound of flesh, and will go after anyone who makes over $30,000.00 gross income from self employment.

1. yes
2. yes
3. nothing, from the CRA that is, it's a legal profession

Apparently, according to Statistics Canada, there were about 1000 returns filed where people declared "escort" as their profession.

Thanks for explaining that! So then, in all seriousness, are they declaring business expenses? Are any incorporated? How does a massage parlour do its' accounting? Are the staff independent contractors or employees? Does a MP establishment pay WCB? Are MPAs eligible for benefits?

Hmmm...

...What would you do if the CRA wanted to audit your claim for website development costs? would you give them the URL to your escort site?
...provide invoices...unless payment was made in cash...keep your receipts ladies...

Are these services GST 'eligible'? That is, could an SP charge (and remit) GST?

I wonder how it works in...say...Amsterdam?

If CRA will accept Escort as a valid business (and rightly so), can another business type use an SP service/receipt as a valid business expense - or maybe a prepaid expense - or maybe a employee benefit?
