There was another interesting finding recently about certain groups of homo sapiens mixing with neanderthals and other cousin species in the not-so-distant geological past. Apparently there's a significant neanderthal DNA presence in peoples from Europe and western Asia, while there is a significant denisovian DNA presence for peoples from eastern Asia. Also quite significant is that both these DNA streams are absent from peoples in southern Africa. There could be something to the idea that we're not necessarily all the same species throughout the world, but very closely related species. And with all of the intermingling that's going on, we might be becoming even more closely related.
