Is their new album any good. I was a bit stunned when they won record of the year or was it album of the year and they were up against Gnarls Barkley and a bunch of other eclectic choices. I was a bit upset as I thought them winning was a reflection of how conservative the voting committee is.

Musically perhaps, politically exactly the opposite. The latter I’m sure played a part in the decision.

The Dixie Chicks were the beneficiary of their popular (among the voters) public stance against Dubya. The fact that they won 'Country Album of the Year' when Maines said they were giving up on country and going for a more rock oriented sound is proof enough that the committee (none of whom are really close to the country scene) wanted to make a political statement.

YEah I meant from a musical perspective from a political stand point they took an unpopular view at the time. I don't really care for them but I am happy to see that they saved their careers from what could have been a disaster.

Oh yeah it was also funny to hear Rick Reuban was the producer as I think of him as a producer of more edgy or hard stuff.

Wasn't a fan of their music until I heard about their politics.
Now I buy every CD.
And now you know why they won 5 Grammies.... the ultra-liberal arts community spooges all over itself at the idea of Natalie Maines giving the finger to George Bush, and she and the other chicklettes reaped the rewards.

In reality, half of Nashville (home of country music) wont play their songs, and their commercial success is but a fraction of what it used to be.

Canadian, British, American, Danish - like your political leaders, hate your political leaders, it is a time honored maxim (and for excellent reasons) that criticism of your Head of Government and Cabinet stops at the border. If you're asked, you can say what you think might be a wise policy or what your concerns are, and you don't have to defend - but direct criticism NO save that for home.

That is a pretty crappy reason to become a fan of a band. I'm sure you can find a band whose political stance you like AND enjoy the music.

Good For Them!!!

they showed a shot of Reba McIntyre applauding...and she was one of their most outspoken critics.

Even the neo-cons are starting to realize Dubya is bad for the country...

The Chicks were always a bit "edgy" for country music...what they lost in "redneck" support will be supplanted by a new audience.

I think it is great they won. First, whether you like the genre or not, they got talent. Second, those motherfuckers in the Republican party wanted to crush them. They had their oxycontin spokesmodel Rush Limbaugh giggling with glee as they were called sluts on his show, and clearchannel stations were outright banning them for their opinion. A few years down the road, the Chicks are still at the top of their game, and the Republicans have decayed further than anyone could have ever expected (the one constant in the Republican party is Bush is still an embarassment).

As Dave Chappelle said---why does everybody care so much about what the Dixie Chicks think? Its not as if they're political scientists or anything, just a bunch of bitches that can sing good. Stop worshiping celebrities so much.

You realize that all celebrities are aware of cameras, right? She was taking advantage of her photo op. Dont kid yourself, hardcore country hates the Chicks, and Reba is as "old country" as they get.

And just an update for you... their "new audience" apparently doesnt buy CDs at the rate of their "old audience". Its just fashionable to support them now, nothing more.

I didn't mean to imply that Reba had changed her mind on the issue...of course she was aware of the camera...she was probably steaming...

Do you have some some stats to back up your statement concerning sales figures of their latest CD?
