According to the Jewish religion everywhere, which also defines the national law in Israel, only a man has the power to grant a divorce. Women find themselves chained to their husbands against their will, even if the separation is mutual. The film follows several such "chained" women in Israel together with Batya, a religious feminist lawyer, who embarks on a struggle against the rabbinical courts, to set these women free.

Sarah has been refused a divorce for two years, Noa has been waiting for three, and Oshrat for nine years. The freedom of these women and hundreds more in Israel is in the hands of their husbands and the rabbinic court. Batya Kahana Dror is a religious woman and combative lawyer, daring to rebel against the Orthodox Jewish courts. She believes the laws must be changed according to our time. She fights for the freedom of Sarah, Noa, Oshrat, and many more.

Shouldn't this be in the religion forum?

I agree that orthodox Judaism rules are unfair in that regard. In Israel much more so, because as far as I know you can't get a civil divorce there. Extremely unfair to Jewish women there. Mind you things can also get complicated if a woman tries to make it difficult for her husband to get a religious divorce, such as by refusing to accept the "get" (divorce document).

In the rest of the world most conservative and reform Jews don't care about a religious divorce, and feel a civil divorce is sufficient, and no impediment to remarriage with or without a non-orthodox religious ceremony.

I have limited knowledge of Catholicism, but I believe civil divorce is not recognized by the Church, and only by having the Church annul the original marriage can the ex-spouses get married to other people in any Catholic church. I have no idea what the grounds for annulment are, but I imagine that could be quite problematic for a great many Catholics, both male and female, with any significant length of marriage.

Would anyone care to comment how Sharia law handles divorce and remarriage?

This is my understanding of how it works in Catholicism as well.

There are several grounds for annulment, but at the end of the day it's up to the Church to make the decision.

To boil it down, an annulment is essentially the Church saying that the marriage was never "valid in God's eyes"; that basically, a mistake was made by the couple being married, the Church acknowledges that mistake, and. as a result, an annulment is granted.

An annulment and a divorce are basically the exact same things, except that an annulment is OK in Catholicism but a divorce is not.

Pretty much the same as Jewish religious law.

It's a problem because a woman can get civilly divorced in Canada pretty easily, but she is still regarded as married and subservient to her husband if she returns to visit family in Egypt or anyplace else in the Mid East.

Not quite. I think the whole stoning to death thing has kind of dropped out of the curriculum. Sharia, not so much.
You misunderstood my post.

In Sharia law, the man is the only partner who can initiate a divorce. So he can force a woman to remain married to him. There are exceptions - IIRC - if the man is convicted of a crime and jailed or if he refuses to financially support the woman. But even that is a tough sell.

Don't be surprised all religion were made to empower men over women.
I think the design of most religion was to control the masses in general, and get them to behave in a certain way by either making them fear divine retribution, or promising them eternal boons for good behavior. Its favor towards men over women is more a sign of the times in which they were written.

I would love to see all religion views removed instead of enforced by the law. They wrote freedom of religion in the US constitution but then ignored it as they supported Christian based laws.
Mature adults should have the right to live as they chose unless it imposes on the rights of others yet Canada has prostitution laws, laws limiting the number of spouses (yes, I can't live with just one), etc.

Maybe there is a fear that one day women might band together and use the one super power they have - the power of the pussy into a organized teamsters type effort then bring all men of every religion to their knees.

That play was already written by Aristophanes about 2500 years ago: Lysistrata... 😉

But the ploy ultimately fails because the women also miss the power of the cock!

A comedy written by a man guessing (or hoping) that women can't resist the charms of a hard dick longer than a man can resist the charms of a woman. I'm guessing that he wasn't married.

If the battle lines are drawn .... I better not be near the front lines ...

Captain ... they're too powerful ! I can't control my own body ... the blood rushing into my cock is making my mind dizzy ...

The bible i was carrying didn't seem to work either..

The world is going to hell in a hurry. Save us Religions of the world.
