Has anyone disputed a charge on your Visa bill? I was reviewing my Visa statement and I noticed a charge that I know I did not purchase. It's a charge online and I traced it to a pornsite, I know I never purchase any porn online and my history on my Visa statements shows it. There is a constant patern in my spending habits and purchasing online porn is not one of them. I can get porn for free these days on the internet, why would I want to pay for it. I know I have to call Visa to dispute it but I don't know if I'll have any sucess. Has anyone ever sucessfully disputed a charge on their credit card? Just wondering.

It is easy to dispute due to the number of fraudulent transactions that occur. They will do due diligence to determine where the purchase originated (IP address etc).

I actually had the cc company call me once to idnicate fraudulent purchases being made on my card.

The real question, though is regarding your card having been compromised. You may need to cancel and get the card re-issued (with a new number).

Same thing happened to me (they called for a questionable purchase) and they reversed it and issued a new card.

Just a word of warning though: just make sure you, or someone you know who has access to your computer, didn't make the charge. If it is found that the purchase was made from your computer, you could get into a lot of trouble for making a fraudulent claim. Also, the excuse that "you can get it for free" isn't grounds or evidence that you didn't make the purchase. I mean, guys on here can get sex for free but they still cruise craiglist looking for B & S operations lol.....

Just one thing too: most purchases of this sort do log the ip of the computer where the purchase was made. I know when I paid for a newsgroup service they did this and many go throuhg a company like CC bill. It should be relatively easy to determine if it was made from your computer or not.....

I've had a dispute couple times...

Once for some entertainment tickets to an event in Calgary, purchased over the internet. The charge was credited immediately.

I was also double charged last February for a Hotel stay in Vegas. Again, I called MC, sent them a letter, and also got a letter from Treasure Island explaining they accidentally double charged me.

I'm careful to check my statements monthly.

I've disputed many times over the years. Personally I prefer Amex when it comes to disputes as they post an immediate credit to your account and then they research so no interest shows on your statement. Visa will research and if you don't pay the disputed charge, interest shows up on your statement but they will reverse it if it's proven it's not your fault. I hate looking at that interest charge on my statement as it could take a while for them.

As mentioned above, someone could have hacked into your online transactions if you purchase anything online, or got your number from other means. If you're totally confident you didn't make the charge, I would immediately cancel and get a new card.

I don't think you will have a problem.

Someone last year charged 2 Plane Tickets to London, England and a Hotel to one of my credit cards and everything was Credited back to my account.

That's wild considering plane tickets need a name on them........

As long as you don't make a habit of challenging charges, you should be fine.

BTW There are a couple of other benefits to using a CC. If you book a flight with a travel agency and the agency or airline goes belly up (happens all the time), the chances are very good that the CC company will reimburse you for your loss. Also, some cards have a "lower price" guarantee (within limits).

On a related subject, have any of you ever "misplaced" your CC? Did it ruin your life?
Happened a few times. Biggest problem is with companies that have your credit card number for monthly charges Rogers, Bell etc. You have to remember what companies you have authorized for monthly charges and notify them with the new card number.

Ha ha ha.

That's why the airlines have to keep huge cash floats on secured deposit for credit card usage in the event they go bust there is somewhere to charge everything back too.

I have disputed a Visa charge once, and was successful. Do it in writing. A store accidentally double charged me. Visa dropped the double charge and I got a written apology from the store owner.

I have disputed numerous things, hotels that screwed up reservations, a gas station that billed every customer twice, recurring charges that we cancelled and the vendor pretended we didn't. They make you write a letter explaining, they look into it, then they credit you. That is one of the many reasons why credit cards are better than debit cards.

Recently our CC company called to say that our numbers had been compromised, so they had to reissue them, which is a pain, you can not rely on one card only, you need to have a few back ups.

While I haven't had to dispute many charges (fortunately), a simple call to Capital One has been sufficient to get them all reversed, usually by the next bill issuance.

They also call me when there seems to be "odd" purchases on my card to confirm that things are okay (had to fill up a rental vehicle and personal vehicle at same time, same station, different pumps (one on my wife's card, one on mine for example).

Years ago (maybe 15) CIBC Visa sent me a form to sign after I called in about an erroneous charge.

Never had to write a letter.

I've had to dispute a few charges as well. Everything from double booked hotel reservations to pizza delivery.

They are typically pretty good about it (I've only dealt with VISA/Royal Bank) but if they drag their feet go your bank who you have the card with. If you have a good relatonship with the bank manager they also have the power to dispute it for you.

As a last resort just tell them to cancel the card and that your going to switch banks and credit card companies.

This will definatley get their attention. If you are a good customer they will do what they can to keep you even if it means the branch absorbing the charge.
