Yes, a very different topic.

I need recommendations for a good dishwashing detergent. Ever since the use of phosphates has been banned in the detergent (last year) I have noticed that glasses don't get that clean. This is been confirmed by reports on CBC and Global news. I have tried various powders, and although they work on the dishes they seem to screw up with glasses. The Cascade action packs are better but not good enough. Any suggestions out there? I have a fairly new dishwasher, so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

Nice Dens
Consumer Reports recommended the Electra-Sol tablets with the little red ball. I use them and they work really nice without etching glass. I also find that putting a tablespoon of regular powder as a pre-rinse makes a big difference.

There is a science to placing the dishes correctly to ensure they get good water action.
Duz that really work?

According to this article published a week or two ago, the whole phosphate ban isn't all it's cracked up to be. I am sure there is more than one side to that story though...

This sounds just like me. I did everything this guy did, and still the glasses came out dirty.

Speaking of bulbs, I should probably go out and buy a few 100 of the old style incandescent bulbs, since the fluorescent ones don't last as long, regardless of what the box says.

The article says that new washers use 1/2 the water of old ones. Maybe we should just be washing our dishes twice.

Exactly. I do the same thing, a touch of cheap powder as a pre-wash, then the powerball.

And where is Madge these days?

In the Country
I use the Finish Gel Packs. I used to use liquid, because in the country our septic system doesn't like powder and the liquid made a mess of my dishwasher, didn't clean the dishes and for whatever reason caused a build up of more calcium. I switched to the Finish Gel Packs and they work great. You can buy them at walmart and Costco.
