Surprised Canon isn't on your list as they are one of the best.

Have you considered them?

Check out the sections "Dave's Pics" and "Digital Camera Finder".

IMO you should be buying something with shake redution/image stabilization, it's a great feature for times where you want to avoid using the flash.

I have canon powershot.
I think that canon has the best lens'
I am very pleased.
One thing to consider is the zoom factor.
Try to find one a 12 power zoom

12x zoom? as in digital zoom? it sucks.
You want to concern yourself more with an optical zoom, not digital.

I would pick the panisonic camera, it has a 12x optical zoom with image stablization. But most important it has a hotshoe to add an external flash, this is very important, because most flashes that come with little pocket cameras are not good. Just look at any pro. photographer they all use large flashes, better light, better picture.

I fyou're in Toronto go into the Henrys downtown store or just eat on Queen Vistek.

There a lot of plus and minus's for all cameras. Both stores have well versed sales people to help you make a decision based on what you want the camera to do consistently.

If you don't mind the extra size go for a DSLR. Any low end DSLR will give you better pictures than a high end compact because of the lenses.

Vistek is overpriced IMHO
Shiek...based on dollar comparisons..THEY all are over priced. Yes you will often find Vistek priced higher for consumer products. On the pro side they are very competitive once you establish yourself with them. I guess it's how they divide the time spent with the consumer. I walk in..I know what I need...know as much as the salesperson..we discuss for three or four minutes and then I purchase.

A consumer looking to purchase a p/s will take as much as 45 minutes of a salespersons time. The person behind the counter has to be paid for somehow and if they spend that amount of time during a day..that's not many customers per day. The sale had better be at the dealer reccomended price to make any money.

Don;t be brand biased with p/s cameras.

My daughter last summer wanted a digital camera..I took her to the local Henrys..I have an account..so the store location is not a big deal.

I let her tell the salesperson what she wanted to do with the camera. Not Dad..the photgrapher telling her she NEEDED this function...what the fark does she know about cameras? I know..but does that help her?

She finally decided after looking at every camera in our price range (4-600) on a very nice SONY unit. And it has done everything she wanted it to do and more. The salsesguy walked her through the menus..and she understood all of it...and she's gotten some great pictures.

I as a Canon buyer would have started there. But I decided to let her pick HER camera. She's thrilled with it. Could another have done more..maybe..but she might not have understood it or really needed it. She's 16 and wants funny pictures of her friends..

The camera has to suit the need of the user. No one brand can do that. It fits her hand, it fits in her pocket..and she knew HOW to use it from day one. More importantly she hasn't lost it! It fits with her lifestyle and body.

Don't discredit any camera make...they will appeal to people for many different reasons. If the occasional 4x6 print and sharing over email is what you want..keep it simple...simple as possible.

If you want more...do the research. And..i will tell you Phil's site at dpreview.com is a good place to start...but limit your reading to the reviews not the forums. It has become a mad house in there..no mods..and it's not really considered a true source any more other than Phil's excellent reviews. You cannot rely on user comments as you could in the past.

My honest advice is go to an actual Camera store..and a big one when making this purchase. Try and go in the off hours..not noon or the weekend and they'll be able to spend dome time with you. Could you get it cheaper elsewhere..maybe..with about 40 bucks of gas added in.

Remember...try and buy from a Canadian store. Best Buy and Future Shop are US owned. Henrys, Vistek, Downtown Camera and many others are Canadian. The profits stay in Canada. Thats important too!

That local store might not be there much longer for the best info if you do not buy there, After all if we won't support Canadian companies who will?

Go with the traditional camera builders because they will have the better lens. Sony might have the higher MB rating but the traditional camera maker will have the better photo technology. Go Canon or Nikon.
Sheesh..this comes up every year. Do NOT go with a Name brand based soley on the BRAND name. In this post you bash SONY..who have some of the best lenses on the market with Carl Zeis.

If you insist on having your head stuck so firmly up your ass...then do not post questions about what camera is best? You only want to hear what you want. Go out and buy it and enjoy it!

Again...go to a reputable camera store..talk to them..they will spend time with you determining which model and make is right for your needs. If you want cheap go to BEST BUY..and let some pimply kid tell you..Oh Ya my grandmother got this and it rocks!

Buyer beware.

I'm done in this thread..I've done what I can and I cannot stop those willing to throw money away!

It was a tough choice

I narrowed it down to the Stylus 720SW & the Stylus 1000

I like the fact that the 720 was waterproof, dustproof & shockproof.. but Olympus will not guarantee that it is waterproof (a spec of dust of sand could compromise the seal. 7.2MP

I chose the Stylus 1000. it came with a larger capacity battery and a few more features.. and is weatherproof 10.MP

The sad thing is that after studying the various specs, I think I was better educated on the cameras than most of the salespeople, especially at the box stores!

I did support a local business and purchased my camera at a small, local camera store.. however, I bought the 2GB xd card at Future Shop

Places like Futureshop and Best Buy have cheap prices for the big ticket items cameras and TVs, but make up thier profit on accessories like cables and memory cards (and extended warranties).

For memory cards, try Tiger Direct or Factory Computer

BTW, I recently bought a refurb digital camera (6MP) and a few days later I could have got a new one (7MP) for $10 more, so shopping around does pay off.

The choice of the camera depends on what you want to use it for.

DSLRs have dropped in price recently but unless you plan to use various lenses, they are needlessly large. The recently announced Canon G7 is a lovely camera, around $600.

Features to look for are whether there is a shutter lag and whether you can use off camera flash.

Hit camera has the best consumer prices:

I beg to differ about two things.

1. dSLR are not "needlessly large", that size is needed for stable holding of the camera.

2. I personaly buy my stuff from Amazing Photo (Market Village), they are authorized dealer of Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Sigma and Pentax; whereas Hit Camera is not an authorized dealer (of Canon, at least)
