[B I for one, think that the $1.50 charge is stupid. Why use Dexit when I can use my debit and credit cards for "free"? [/B]
Dexit has been tested under a pilot run in the downtown core since last summer and it will be rolled out based on popularity. To answer the above question, it does in fact make a LOT of sense. You can pre-load the Dexit tag with up to $100 at a time and they will charge you the $1.50 After that, you are free to make all of your smaller purchases without incurring any additional transaction fees (unlike your bank account)

So you can now make smaller purchases for things like coffee, muffins, lunch, tylenol (as someone mentioned needing) and not have to worry about any extra fees. Let's say for example you load up your Dexit card for that $100 and make 10 purchases to use it up. Now if you made 10 withdrawals from your bank account, chances are you will be charged 10 x $0.50 or $0.65 depending on your Bank....so either $5.00 or $6.50 With your Dexit tag, you've only paid $1.50 The savings will only increase if you make more withdrawals as well.

Makes sense to me!! I say we screw our Banks and stop making so many withdrawals and see how they like not making as much money. I've already gone the route of making fewer larger withdrawals as opposed to a bunch of $20/$40 withdrawals. I refuse to pay the Bank $15-20 a month when they're making billions in profits annually. Bastards!!

You should make a habit of withdrawing based on your needs, avoid making small withdrawls. (one time $1,000 as to 10 times $100).

Open an account with President's Choice (Loblaws) and there is no fees for on cash withdrawls and debit charges.

Dexit is just an alternative to cash and benefical to retailers than customers - no needed to carry all the loose changes.

Actually, that's a very good practice... I use my debit card a lot, and didn't realize that I was being hit with all kinds hidden bank service charges. In some months, those hidden fees add up to about $40!!! It was a bank rep who brought this to my attention; (while discussing investment portfolios and such). Since then, I've been trying to make a practice of it. At the same time, I don't like carrying around large amounts of cash on me. :(

cashless society == slave society.

think:

auto-taxation -- every cent is accounted for so no cheating

speeding/parking ticket fines debited on the spot, tied to the GPS in the vehicle

EVERY purchase captured and logged in a database somwhere, ripe for mining by some future "homeland security" agency.

No thanks.

I think that whole topic of 'Big Brother is watching' needs to have a thread of its own. In my opinion, our society is already chin deep in the shyte. The information age is here. The dependence and daily use of emoney, sophisticated high speed computer and communication networks, universal connectivity, and digital technologies are today's reality. It is quickly becoming impossible to hide from Big Brother, or from anyone else for that matter. Look at all the counter measures you need when you're just surfing the net... Trojans, web bots and spiders, targeted marketing, browser and OS exploits... and I'm just talking the net. Now think of the many ways your personal information is collected and used offline.

Why is identity theft the buzz word of the day?.

IMO, it's Too Late!!

Actually, we are all currently branded and tracked in more ways than one. Not by a single entity, but by anyone who knows how to use our current technology to do so..

Be it high tech or low tech, from DNA to GPS... All the required technologies are here and widely available.

However, I'm sure that using a dexit card as a substitute for
pocket change, won't make matters any worse for me.

I saw something almost as cool at Rite Aid Pharmacy in the US.

It's a Mastercard that you buy and load up at the counter. You can add anything from $20 to $500 on to it, and re load it at any time, or just buy another one.

In the United States, MasterCard and Visa have two neat types of cards; (Currently unavailable here in Canada).

1) Debit cards: Visa check card or Debit MasterCard - Purchases are automatically deducted from your checking account.

2) Pre-paid cards: Visa & MasterCard gifts and student cards - Spending is limited to the amount of money that's loaded onto the card.

They can all be replaced if lost or stolen and offer the same security protection and recognition as a regular credit card. Great for making purchases on and offline, and safer than carrying cash.
