TORONTO -- A development proposal submitted to the City of Toronto last week could mean the end for Sneaky Dee’s, an iconic downtown music venue and restaurant.

The proposal, which was submitted on Sept. 4, calls for a 13-storey mixed-use building that would take over the lot Sneaky Dee’s currently sits on, as well as other neighbouring units along College Street east of Bathurst Street.

The proposal consists of 169 dwelling units and 13,009 square metres of “combined residential and non-residential gross floor area.”

Sneaky Dee’s has been around since 1987. It was originally located on Bloor Street near Honest Ed’s.

Reacting to the possible closure, Mayor John Tory said he is concerned about the potential loss of another music venue in Toronto.

“We know the importance of music venues in our city – that’s why we have taken action to help provide property tax relief for these sites to help them remain viable,” Tory said on Monday.

While the application has been filed for the downtown site, planning officials have yet to review it, the mayor said.

“I am committed to working with local councillor Mike Layton to make sure whatever happens at this location is in the best interests of the community, something which goes well beyond any single development,” he said.

“Hearing from the community is an important part of the planning process and I want to assure people that both councillor Layton and myself will be listening to their feedback.”

Layton took to Twitter over the weekend to express his feelings on the matter.

“Late Friday before the long weekend a developer submitted an application that includes the site of iconic Sneaky Dee’s,” he wrote. “I’ve watched friends bands upstairs and eaten kings crown at brunch for as long as I can remember. We can’t lose institutions like these.”

Layton went on to state that he has not seen any further details of the proposal.

“There are many considerations, but first will be that the area has been under review as part of a Kensington Market Heritage Conservation District coming to council in fall,” he said.

When asked further about the proposal on Monday, Layton said the city will be receiving supportive documents from the developer in the coming weeks.

“What we do know is they are proposing a 13-storey building where one would have expected a little bit of a shorter building,” he said. “I don’t know in detail about if or what they are proposing to keep.”

“There’s more than just one venue here but we don’t know and we haven’t seen yet if the developer is interested in keeping those and keeping some of that vibrant scene on that corner in such an important area of Toronto that I would say is vital to not only the music industry in the city as we lose small and medium-sized venues, but also to our overall collective quality of life in using spaces where you can create great memories.”

On social media, many were opposed to the possible new development. Thousands have signed an online petition to "save Sneaky Dee's."

Old Toronto series creator Morgan Cameron Ross said it is encouraging to see residents and local politicians expressed their concern for the venue's future.

"It's an institution, and it's one of the few in the city that has stayed with us," Ross said.

"I think we all have this feeling where we've lost too many institutions…especially music venues."

A request for comment from Sneaky Dee’s has not yet been returned.

Totally aweful we should have a 10 year moratorium on devolopment subject to a minimum 100 million fine.

It's really not a great music venue so not sure what the big deal is. The restaurant part can always re-locate. I realize some of the nostalgia will be lost as there would be intrinsic upgrades, but I'm sure they can find a spot to lease in the area.

This is not the case. Location location location. I challange you to name all the replacement revenues from the other lost music venues? Toronto is a city on a coma almost ready for death. We are entering the 80-90s stage of the NYC cycle. Same mistakes but with less wealth of culture to keep it alive.

Venues come and venues go. I had some good times at Sneaky Dee's, but it will be replaced w another dive-y music bar in another scruffy neighbourhood.

Each generation has the same experience. The generation before me saw all its favourite music venues in Yorkville gentrified and torn down for condos. There will always be new venues to create new memories for a new generation of ne'er-do-wells.

I used to hang out in the East Village back in the 1980's because I was lucky enough to have "cool New York friends". I went back to that same neighbourhood on a visit to NYC in 2010 and all the old places were gone and the scene has now apparently moved to Brooklyn. C'est la vie

The Mexican Restaurant before Sneaky Dee's was awesome, Dee's kept the chef.

Haven't been there in ages, is the quality of the food still as good?

This only works if the gov - and we are talking about a gov decision here - supports and plans for such things - bad moves get you cities like Detroit - again Toronto is becoming as wasteland living off previous glory. And no, each generation does not have its venues - or at least not the same value -sure basement parties can happen anywhere. There are many art forms gone the way of the DODO. And what replaced brothel island in Toronto?
You get the city you plan for -flooding, parks, music, traffic, crime all are result of planing and reaction. Giving up a music venue for more pop. and thus more traffic congestion? How does this help the city?

I have always had a rule with women that I'm happy to call them on an ultimatum. And I've never regretted losing a single one of them. That's the long sorry road to Henpecked Town.

It wasn't a very good venue sound wise. It lived by reputation.

And as for replacement live music on the down swing. Kids prefer techno and dance or whatever the latest term is. Garage bands are way down the list. The profit margin is lower than a club. And it's far easier to get discovered and bank cash online than shlepping a van load of equipment for $50 bucks each.

Venues close because the market changed. That's the reality.

Been going there since it opened. Besides the lunch specials, the regular menu prices really jumped in recent years. And the service from the unavoidable older woman is terrible.
A good place to get bombed with buddies though. Live music in general in Toronto is basically the same friends and family of a band showing up. Wish it would not close though.

The "Kensington Lobby" is so powerful that they killed the Wal-mart down the street a few years ago.

It was a crappy venue but it was cheap.
Really poor sound and you really did want to see that place in daylight (not that much could get through the blocked off windows).
Finding venues with rent that cheap is really almost impossible and without that its harder for bands starting out to have a place to play.
Already too many venues have become pay to play, where bands pay a fee for the room and get the door, instead of getting door and/or percentage of bar sales.
It had its place and will be hard to replace.

We only go for the nachos, because they're the best in the city. Homemade tortillas laid out on a pizza tray (not piled high like most places) with excellent toppings. The topping to tortilla ratio is perfect. The chicken (our protein choice) is always tender and juicy. I highly recommend this place if you're a nachos fan!

I'll have to check it out before it closes, I don't think I've been to Dee's this Century.

Another institution closed last December. Yitz closes after 47 years on Eglinton near Avenue road. Their roast beef on rye was the best anywhere. Always tender, never dry, with a hit of horseradish, it was the perfect sanguichi. Their beet borsch and their bagles were made fresh. I usually had the chicken salad, not into cream cheese.

I heard they madd great nachos!

Haven’t tried breakfast there but my favorite breakfast place was Maggies, just stones throw from them on the north side of college.

HUGE portions of stuffed french toast and a chef that really cared. Nice Latin family owned it. If I knew where the chef moved to after it closed, I’d go find it just to eat his cooking again

They did a good breakfast and yeah the nacho's were amazing. Haven't been in about 15 years though as I live in Vaughan so it's to far for me.
