Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitney Ford and none of them collected 3,000 hits?
Whitey is a pitcher. Ruth and Gehrig were power hitters (they tend to not be the best candidates for high hit totals). Ruth also spent his first few years as a pitcher. Joe D lost 5 years of his prime because of WWII. Mantle was injury prone (and also a power hitter). Berra was a catcher (catchers don't play enough games to qualify for most longevitiy numbers). And all of them played when a a season was 154 games.

I knew about the hits, but no Yankee 300 game winning pitchers ? WOW ! One would think that the Yankees, if any baseball organization, would have all of those bases covered(pardon the pun).
Well Clemens and Randy Johnson both pitched for the Yankees. They are 300 game winners

Shack ... Dude ... I think you need to re-read post #1. The question is not whether or not Jeter will get 3,000 hits, but rather if you are cheering for him to do the feat, a first for any NY Yankee.
Boggs has over 3000 hits. Do you mean to get number 3000 in a Yankee uniform?

I really couldn't care less. He's a Yankee and therefore scum to me.
Scum? Dude, seriously? By all accounts Jeter is a good guy who has played the game the way it should be played. He has also respected the game and it's history, after legendary stadium announcer Bob Sheppard passed away Jeter requested that a recording of Sheppard announcing Jeter be played for the rest of his Yankee career.

I don't get the mentality of some "sports fans" who view opposing players as scum because they are on the opposing team. I am a lifelong die hard Cubs fan, the Cardinals are the biggest rivalry and I've been lucky enough to see that rivalry in person a few times at Wrigley. I certainly rooted against Albert Pujols every time he came to the plate, in one game in particular he single-handedly wrecked the Cubs going something like 5-6 with a couple of dingers. As a fan of baseball I can appreciate his immense talent, he is one of the best players in the game, and I like the fact that I was able to see it in person at the friendly confines. I definitely don't view Pujols as scum just because he plays for the Cardinals.

Much as I loathe the NYY's, Jeter is one of the great players of this generation and has always been a class act. He's a sure thing 1st ballot HoF-er and one of the great clutch players of his time. There would be no Yankees Dynasty without #2.

Hate the team; respect the man. I'll be cheering for him all the way.
Well said Oagre, I couldn't agree more.

I guess I was not clear enough, but yes, 3,000 all as a New York Yankee.

Ah.... maybe I am a little slow tonight. I realize you are making a joke, but I do not get it.

A little research on Yankee hitters. Forgot to post it earlier.

Babe Ruth - 2,873
Lou Gehrig - 2,721
Joe DiMaggio - 2,214
Mickey Mantle - 2,415
Yogi Berra - 2,150

Whitney Ford was a pitcher.

If he said you also cheer for Microsoft and Coca-Cola, would that make it easier to understand ?

Cheering for the Yankees (if you weren't born in one of the 5 boroughs) is like cheering for an all powerful corporation.

It's stronger than that - in Vegas, the unwritten rule is that you always cheer for the players against the House. Only an asshole cheers for the House unless they have a vested interest. <wink>

Excellent post.

I'm a lifelong Yankee fan but always appreciate greatness when I see it.

Thats the difference between a fan and a fanatic.

I guess it helps that I like NYC a lot and I have a strong dis-like for the Red Sox.

I hear you there.

They're my 2nd least favourite team in MLB.

The Dodgers, specifically Rick 'Cocksucker' Monday, are tops on my dislike list.

Funny thing, one of my 3 favourite baseball broadcasters is Vin Scully, the others, the late Tom Cheek, and Ernie Harwell.

Man Steve Rogers threw that one right down the centre and you could have heard a pin drop in the big ''o'' afterwards.

Derek Jeter just tied Babe Ruth's record of 2,873 hits:cool:. However, 355 of the Babe's hits did not come in a Yankee uniform.

Jeter passes Babe Ruth with an RBI double last night at Yankee 'The House That Jeter Built' Stadium.
