So from piecing together several news reports it appears the strong wind tilted one of the wings towards the tarmac, it scraped the runway, that wing then broke off, which caused the wind to lift up the remaining wing, which in turn flipped the plane over.

Based on preliminary reports, that sounds like a reasonable chain of events. Of course, time will tell. Anyway, scary shit when it happens to you, but flying is still an extremely safe way to travel.

Your odds of dying in a plane crash are 1 in 11 million. Compared to the lifetime odds of dying in a car crash which are 1 in 93.

Not to mention, studies show that over 95% of passengers involved in a plane crash actually survive.

With the major wind gusts, if a plow was involved, it was likely the plow would be on an adjacent taxiway.
Normally not a problem.

But if a gust pushed the plane to be well off the centreline of the runway, with a wing way further over than it normally would be, then it could be catastrophic.

Looked like the landing gear broke for me too.
But I thought it was the right landing gear, causing the right wing to hit the tarmac, causing the plane to bounce the other way.
Eventually leading to it rolling on its side and ending up on its back.

Looked like a very hard landing but I am no expert.

There could also be other planes vortexs as well as the wind
causing the hard landing

I am surprised the ceiling was so strong that it never collasped or tore apart

Slamming the airliner down onto the tarmac as hard as this pilot seemed to is what broke the landing gear I'd say.
