You could probably send it back to dell. If it's out of warranty (I'm guessing it is), it'll probably cost quite a bit.

Your cheapest option is probably one of the computer stores around Spadina/College. There are a few used laptop stores on College just West of Spadina.

If you plan on bringing it to Futureshop or Computer System Centre, you're probably better off sending to Dell, because it'll cost you the same.

The motherboard is shot. A new one costs $800+ from Dell but I can buy one off Ebay for far less. Even with the cost of service, it's cheaper than buying new and the laptop is only a year and a half old.

Those deals at Dell aren't deals at all, b/c they only include a 1 year warranty (my first mistake). Once you factor in what you really need, the costs creep up to a grand easy.

ok i will say this once always buy the extended warranty on a laptop.
Now back to the Dell issue...... one of my client schools use Nerds on Site for the boarders PC laptops ( as myself and the IT staff in the school only support mac). The Nerd on site guy recommended a Dell to be taken into the FutureShop for repair as it needed a logic board replacement. Futureshop could not get the part. Taken to localshop on SPadina as i recommended at logicboard was replaced and repaired for 650 dollars..... 3 monthes later logicboard was dead again. Taken back to place on Spadina they would not warranty there own work and wanted another 650 dollars.

i guess what i was trying to say to just save a couple hundred bucks you would be better off sending it to Dell.
As far as the PoerBooks go ... yeah you should have bought one but in all honesty lately i have seen as many bad powerbooks as bad pc notebooks.

Laptops seem to have such a short life compared to desk tops. I have a couple of dead ones around here.

Check out EBay for a good deal on a used. You can probably pick up something more powerful for what repairs to your old one will cost. (I hope you got your stuff off the old one.)

I have a 4-year in home warranty for my Dell desktop.
If they dont honor it then I'll see them in court.
My advice, always get the extended warranty.

Today's laptop manufacturers purchased their component parts "without" manufacturer's warranty. If your hard drive craps out, you will find out that it is not even covered by manufacturer's warranty when you get to the manufacturer's web site and punch in the serial number.

The Laptop guys like Dell saved about $10 each hard drive but you lost 3 year's worth of warranty. Always buy the extended warranty when getting a Laptop. In Dell's case, this applies to their Desktops as well - so be warned.

BTW, in home warranty means a toll free number to access a guy in India who would ask you to pop in the recovery CD and reformat your drive. This fixes 80 percent of the problems but you'd better backup your data regularly. The other major breakdowns are Power supply, video card, and CD-ROM. If your CD-ROM is "the" problem, be prepared to "play technician" as they will send you the CD-ROM for your in-home installation with their telephone instructions.

How do I know ? I am in this business ! ;)

Call Dell

Tell them you are a dissatified customer. Complain, they usually come through if your notebook is less than two years old.

I did that. Dell did nothing other than repeat their "off warranty" mantra. That's why I'll never buy another product from Dell, including paying them to repair their own crappy product.

dell has there service sub contracted out so you can call them directly but parts is different story, or you can call dell directly for a support call and pay the big bucks. Your better off taking it to a local computer store i find that future shop and best buy are rups for repairs
