Yes it's very sad.

At the risk of sounding unsympathetic, the parents put their daughter in an unlicensed daycare. Checking on licensing and doing unannounced drop-ins is part of the responsibility that comes with putting your kid in someone else's care.

It is why we have had government inspectors and licensing of all sorts of ordinary but risky businesses for thousands of years. Your own safety and well being is always DiY, but that just isn't a universal answer, amnd we often need expert help and official' muscle'.

The tragedy aside, the real concern going forward is that there is so little official response when a provider—licensed or unlicensed—is in breach of rules or good practices. In this case more than one parent withdrew their child because of serious concerns but didn't have a clear avenue for doing more.

At the risk of sounding like a reasonable, responsible individual who would exercise sound judgement in all matters pertaining to their children's safety and well beiing. Let's hope that this tragedy will bring some constructive, positive change regarding all Daycares. Sincerely, Jon .

It was difficult but certainly not impossible to find replacement care. I interviewed many providers before selecting one.
I know some parents with means who hire Filipino nannies to look after their kids. I also know some parents who leave their kids with their own Italian, Portuguese or Chinese parents. But, not everybody has the means to hire a Filipino nanny or have a family support system.

For me, the issue remains poorly/dangerously run and/or otherwise unlicenced Daycares- and the parents/caregivers responsiblities in finding good quality care for their children. Sincerely, Jon .

I can understand tight finances, but that doesn't excuse half assign childcare arrangements. There are many resources, from police checks to online ratings that you can search to get references.

Ive heard horror stories about nannies too, from depleting the liquor cabinet to inviting their boyfriends over for nooners while the kids play in the basement.

still, if you have more than one kid, a nanny is actually cheaper than daycare.

We are lucky to have our parents around, who drop in or even stay around all day to check on the kids. So far, we are very happy with our nanny. She's a keeper.
