It seems I dl'd something (spyware tc) which corrupted my files or registry and I cannot dl or upload to the net ( ie browse or send receive email etc ) I can however connect and packets can be sent/received.

I already did a partial install of windows and removed SP2.

Sympatico seems to be out of ideas and so does microsoft, so I'm just wondering if TERB has any ideas as to what has been corrupted along the lines of winsock, DNS etc

no virus's spyware etc are currently present.

I'm using my old PC, which connects fine.

Oddly enough when I had someone else install XP-home it has a blue activity "LED" bar on the startup screen rather than the previous green one. Any ideas as to why this would be, because it's crucial in my struggle toward serenity.

Also why isn't there such a thing as a computer "outcall" techy ( or is there ) Well, there should be. I think they would make a killing, especially if they implemented other extras into the service.

TIA

try the following

1. Check if any firewalls are present
2. Sweep the pc for possible spyware and viruses
3. Do a repair install of Win XP (but back up important data first)
4. Run Winsockfix
5. Check router, network card, cables, etc.

And yes, there are computer technie outcalls, lots of them out there, because I am one of them. (doing it part-time) :D

Thanks ... 1, 2 and 5 are pretty much verified. I'm not sure exactly how to do 3 and 4, but will check into it ... I know we addressed the winsock issue on some level though ...

Maybe I'll require your services then, but dispense with any "extras" : )

UMustang, I'm not entirely sure. Microsoft ran me through it as their solution to removing SP2 ( which is what sympatico required to do a regedit- to no avail ) I was too busy just following instructions take a mental note. I'd been on the phone and trying to solve the issue for hours by that time. It may have been a "repair install" (?) It took a good hour to complete. It did involve most of the steps after and including step 8 as in the link below

That's what I thought baci, but I now have home edition with a blue 'activity bar' ... it still says 'home edition' ... go figure.

thanks.

I think I've figured out my confusion, baci, although not confirmed it on my other PC

After some searching ( goggle not soul ) it seems that SP2 changes the home edition screen to one with a blue activity bar, but it no longer says which edition it is - I could easily be mistaken regarding it having actually said 'home edition' and it may now be returned to green ... how cool is that ?

now we can all sleep a little more soundly ... back to the internet connection issue tomorrow ... I gotta go watch 'next top model'

It worked !

Oh well, I learnt a few things along the way ... next time, I skip microsoft and sympatico and come straight to the TERB techies.

To those who pm'd me offering help in return for "services" thanks anyway lol ... I don't feel as jealous of Kathleen :þ

PS baci, I confirmed that it is indeed a feature of SP2 ... now, I gotta reinstall SP2
