Most of the time I love my job. And I guess it is cause I do have such a great job that I’m not leaving and going to China. Truth be told… if I was working in some other mundane sales job… making good money or not I would quit and go. I could always find another job when I get back.

What to heck am I talking about?

My landlady and her hubby are off to China for 3 months end of this month. Since I have been friends with them for almost 10 years now and living in their house for almost 8 years (they are just like family to me) they offered to take me… all expenses paid.

At first I thought Xing was just teasing me. He said one reason he would like to bring me to China is cause he knows I have yellow fever and wants to help me find a “nice Chinese girl” as he put it. I talked to my landlady and she said yes he is serious. If I want to go just say the word. They will take care of me for the whole time I’m there… won’t cost me a dime.

Alas I turned it down… because of my job… I don’t want to quit my job and I doubt it they would give me such an extended holiday or leave of absence.

Dang! Why did Xing have to ask me that? Son of a gun… all morning I just been thinking about all those pretty Asian girls I could be meeting and 3 months away from the office and a Toronto winter… DAMN!

Like I say… I do love my job… but today I say…

Am I nuts or what?

Damn, damn, damn!

Between a rock and a hard place
Just tell them Dr. Wha has diagnosed you with Yellow fever and has prescribed three months of rest in a private clinic overseas. I will gladly write the prescription for you for a small fee.

Bang your head on something... like say slipping on the ground... and take a disability leave, and say that you were referred to some Ancient Chinese remedy that's only available in China.

It's not fraud seeing how you really did hurt your head.

Or provoke a gang-banger (not SP) and get shot.

Why don't you ask if you can take a 3 month leave? There must be something you can do over their that is work related (partnering with a company to put out a chinese version of your publication for example) that would be of interest to them. Just a thought.
If that doesn't work suggest to your friend sending someone (I'll volunteer) in your place to take pictures of the trip so you can see what you missed :) .

Only a person raised in North America would turn down a once in a lifetime offer like that for a job. Sad where the priorities are.

Why not compromise NiteHwk?

Perhaps you can take 4 weeks of and at least get a taste of China.

If your hosts are willing to sponsor you for 3 months, they are likely to be willing to have you at their side for a shorter period of time.

Ask the powers that be at work how much time they will let you have above your allotted vacation.

You should at least ask at work, you never know, some bosses would recognize that you are an exceptional worker, and that this is an exceptional opportunity, and allow you to make it happen.

That's tough

Two of my co-workers in China on vacation right now. Chinese New Year is in two weeks and they get two weeks of holidays for it. I'd love to have an opportunity to go over there and experience some real culture. I've been trying to learn Mandarin for years, but that would be the ultimate, expecially with all-expenses paid.

What part of China are they going to Nite Hawk?

Depends where they are going. Northern part Beijing & parts of Asia are having a pretty bad winter with record snowfall. Called out the army to clear roads.

Ideally you go now so they pay you ways for if not possible. There's websites for mail-order brides. Just make you pick, have your landload/lady make the arrangement and you meet the girl(s) at later time. They probably have distance relative that love to practice their english when you go solo.

Does that mean you'll have house-parties while they're away?:)

What exactly do you think you'll gain by staying at work for those same 3 months?
Good questions, thanks. I did think about that. Aside from the possibility of meeting some ‘Nice Chinese girl’ as Xing keeps harping on me I could experience the culture of China. Visit The Great Wall and other landmarks etc. That would be so fantastic. A friend of mine (who is married to Asian girl) went last year. When he got back he showed me all his pics and was talking about his trip for days. I was really very impressed and jealous.

What will I gain by staying at work? Lots of money. And that’s the catch all for me. Even if I did get so lucky that I got a paid leave it would be sans commissions. More then half my pay is commission. Three months’ commissions for me adds up to way too much to lose. So in that sense when I think about it… the trip is not free. It would cost me thousands of $$$ in lost commissions. Too scary for me.

LMAO… yah! When they get back they won’t even recognize the place. <LOL>

NOT… Actually it means now I’ll have more chores to do around the house. I don’t even remember the last time I ever shoveled snow for example… cause they always do it. Anybody have a cheap snow blower for sale?

I’ll bet they are going to have a hot pot party day before they leave though… all their friends etc I’m looking forward to that.

Old chinese saying is money you spend really money . Sure you would make a lot but if you spent it has it really been made. Trip to China would be great and like someone suggested maybe you could do some work there.
Have you asked about leave.

It would be good to see the city prep for the Olympics. And so much history there.

CBC Newsworld has a documentary tonight on China Rises, produce in partnership with NY times, France and others

But heard Miss Asia pagent may be on Fairchild tonight, hm, what to watch.

In terms of travel, my friends and relatives know that I'm ready and willing to travel on moment's notice. Whether as driver, navigator, bagboy or handbag carrier... Some very rewarding excurisons - the world as our playground.

At the same time, turned down few exotic trips 'cause of work - it does get in the way. Trying to do a tag-along with friend to europe on biz. Incentives, the EE ladies playing in Aus open are nice eye candy not to mention the moaning.

Forgive me bringing this conversation down to a more basic level but, if you wre to calculate how much of your after tax income you would spend here on SP fun in the three month period that you would otherwsie be in the land of the little people, and then compare what you spend in China during the same time for some local poon tang, then I suspect you would find that an expense paid trip would be far less costly, net, than you might think.

Alternatively, if you finally turn it down, kindly enquire if the generous couple would like to adopt a friendly, house-trained and horny terbite?

Happy Long Dong, if you go!

Poontang is actually Filipino term, as well as a Thai spicy noodle dish.

In this case, probably Shanghai noodles, Shrimp spring rolls, Cantonese wonton. Asian men offen describe women as dishes. Food is big part of Asian culture.

Not sure about Nite but for me, my beef is timing, unable to take advantage of spontaneous opportunities. I've a carry-on ready at moment notice but work commitment often gets in the way.
