Toronto police investigate the collision, near the U of T downtown campus, involving a white pickup truck that sent two pedestrians and a cyclist to hospital on Wednesday evening.
Two pedestrians and a cyclist have been seriously injured after a multi-vehicle collision near the University of Toronto’s downtown campus.
A pickup truck driver was involved in a collision with two other vehicles, two pedestrians and a cyclist near College and St. George streets just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday evening, according to Toronto police.
A woman in her 20s and a man in his 40s, who were walking in the area, and a cyclist in his 50s were all taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The pickup truck driver remained at the scene, police said in a tweet posted to X.
At the corner of the intersection was a smashed blue vehicle with glass shattered over the street. Next to it was a white vehicle — that didn’t appear to be damaged — being towed by police.
A few feet in front of the two cars was a bicycle, lying twisted and crushed on the sidewalk. A traffic signal post, a light post and garbage bin were also knocked down.
Crews secure wires from a lamppost that was knocked over in the Wednesday evening collision as a crumpled bike lays on the sidewalk.
Half a block west of the scene, on the north side of the street, a white pickup truck was on the sidewalk with damage to the front, the licence plate hanging off and the front-left wheel askew.
The pickup truck appeared to have gone out of control, ran into two cars, two pedestrians and a cyclist after driving off the road and over the curb separating the bike lane before stopping on the sidewalk in front of the U of T bookstore.
The posted speed limit is 40 km/h.
Staff at the University of Toronto Bookstore said they were alarmed and heard the crash noises but didn’t see the collision happen.
College Street was temporarily closed between Beverley and McCaul Streets as officers investigated. The 506 Carlton streetcar was being rerouted to Dundas Street between Ossington Avenue and Bay Street.
The intersection was reopened within a few hours.
