As you may or may not know I live near the ottawa river parkway now and am looking to get a new bike. I haven't ridden in some years and need a comfortable bike as my tushy for all it's padding doesn't seem to be in the right place.. as well as an old tailbone injury so sitting for long periods of time can hurt.

I won't be doing hills as this is not workout oriented but more for sheer pleasure along the bike path and to get back and forth to downtown.

suggestions for me? I will be going to the bike stores in westboro to ask as well but thought I'd start here to get a variety of opinions.

cheers, Carrie.

Found it!

Carrie, you know I love your presence on the board... As a bit of a goof ball, I would be remiss in posting this as my recommendation for you! :D

Seriously though, A bike is a matter of personal preference. I ride a hard tail mountain bike by Trek. From what you describe perhaps a full suspension bike would be more to your liking (with shocks at both front and back...)

Price is another thing... I suggest going to a real Bike shop and ask the guys there, they will ask your style of riding, if more suitable for pavement or trails etc... (that sort of thing) and they should be able to recommend something in the price range you specify.

Happy Trails!

Heading to a reputable bike shop is the best idea.
Unless you would be satisfied with something from one of the Box stores. But remember you usually get what you pay for.

If your intentions are to ride 3-5 hr per week and enjoy the activity, see some nice sites, and get fitter. Then the equipment should fit you correctly.

You also need to establish your price point, Go to the bike shop. ;)

My SO isn't comfortable riding bent over so we bought her a "commuting bike" where you ride sitting up more or less straight. Also replaced the seat that came with it with another one that provided more cushy for her tushy :)

Best advice has been given.. talk to various bike shops and decide what will suit you best. If you're just going for the occasional meander something economical from C. Tire or Walmart might suit, if you're more serious then you will want to spend a little more money.

Don't forget the helmet!

GOOD ADVICE... Stay away from box stores... they know shit there (if you can even find a salesman) and the quality is also shit. :(

ha! Seeing as I'm not a fan of dildos..and prefer mouths/fingers and of course cocks.. I would not enjoy that bike!

I like the idea of sitting up a bit more. I've previously only had 10-speeds and a more cushy seat added..

I think Sheik has some decent advice, and would avoid the full suspension mountain bike recommended by CycleGuy. "Town bikes" are popular now, and tend to be focussed on light road riding, comfort, and convenience. I think Breezer makes a nice town bike (founded by Joe Breeze, mtn bike pioneer).

http://www.breezerbikes.com/bike_details.cfm?bikeType=town&frame=u&bike=uptown

Things I like about the breezer are they have a U frame option, come with racks (a rack is mandatory, get a pannier and throw in a picnic lunch or a blanket/book/radio for time in the park), and offer Shimano Nexus (basically an enclosed drive train so you do not have to worry about chain drops or your pants getting in the chain ring). The Nexus hubs can also have an integrated generator, meaning you have lights when things get dusky.

As for saddles, most big plushy saddles are less comfortable. You want a saddle that will fit your ass. Terry makes a nice woman's saddle (MEC in Ottawa will sell them). The suspension seat post on the Breezer can take the road edge off.

Good luck with whatever you buy. You already have incredible legs... I can't imagine how much nicer they will be after a nice summer of riding.

ooo. I like that it folds... neat feature. MEC is closeby so I'll check out the seats and thanks for the legs comment :)

Hee hee, I was obviously just joking about the dildo bike Carrie. :p

And only reason I suggested the dual suspension model was since you referred to a previous tail bone injury, and the add'l shock absorption may alleviate that issue altogether.

In the end, a good bike shop is your best option. They are best suited to make a recommendation for you based on the information you give them.

Happy trails!

Yes.. but I wanted to look a wee bit like I had a list before going in.. do they let you take bikes for test drives?

Don't waste your money. One of those bikes will just wind up in your garage with dust on its seat. Get one of these:
