Right now I have an $800 paperweight Asus laptop on my hands, barely 1.5 years old...and I'm not really sure what the best route is. It started with a fried mobo before the holidays and I didn't have much time to do the whole RMA process. Now I've setup the RMA, but came to the realization that the motherboard isn't the only problem. I now have a dead battery, and I'm pretty sure my hard drive is dead as well. (fans don't spin, they did before]

Now the guys I spoke to on the phone were firm about their pricing for fixing it out of warranty, couldn't even haggle them to cut it down to just labour costs. I was hoping to fix it up for under $200 and just sell it. Now it looks like I'll also have to fix the battery, as well as possibly getting a new HD. Does anyone know how much that'll run me?

My original plan was to fix it for under $200, sell it for $~550-600 and buy a new laptop that'll last a bit longer. I'm not sure if it's still worth fixing and selling. Should I just scrap it and buy new? Also, are notebook HD's the same as PC, i.e plug and play? I'd like to recover my files if possible. Thanks for reading.

late post, sorry if i sound confusing

Have you contacted Asus despite it being out of warranty(I assume 1 year) and possibly put forward a case to them that you may have gotten a lemon?

If you decide to RMA be sure of any additional costs to you upfront.

I purchased two Asus Laptops from Canada Computers 5 years ago and never had any problems.

These were $1500 at the time but I now see there are sub $500 ones being sold on Amazon.

Not sure what level you have but there seems to be differences in quality of components at different levels.

Asus in general is not what they used to be anyway.

... no one is going to offer you what you think it is worth.
Correct!
Nobody buys used laptops, other than the ill informed.

I may buy a used desktop but would NEVER consider buying ANY used laptop.....;)

yeah that's what a I figured, sometimes you get the random person from craigslist or kijiji desperate enough lol. Perhaps I could part it? I'm sure I can still get something out of the RAM and the LED screen. But I have no experience parting things like that..lol

There are cables to help you recover your files like this

http://canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=48_19_797&item_id=027042

assuming the HD is not fried as well.

Myself, I would cut my losses. Even if everything worked fine, you are going to get creamed on resale. There are plenty of new laptops with warranty under $500 so no one is going to offer you what you think it is worth.
Thanks for the link! I'm assuming laptop HD's uses the micro sata? Do you know the specs of PC HD's?

Also, is Asus still one of the top manufacturers for laptops? I'm thinking of picking up another one...despite what happened with mine lol. Newegg still cheapest?

I still use this as a guide

And would only consider buying Asus or Toshiba.

Well... I have no opinion about manufacturers but if you are going to buy another laptop then I recommend the 3 year warranty from a reputable dealer. Perhaps you or your environment is responsible for this failed unit which might happen to the new unit. Just sayin..

Asus have one of the best no extra charge warranties in the business...Manufacture's Warranty: 2YR Global/1YR Accidental Damage/30-Day Zero Bright Dot/2-way FREE shipping/24-7 tech support

they have had this policy for a few years now.......unless you purchased from a non authorised dealer you should still be covered....and even then they will probably cover it

Have to agree.
4 yrs ago I got a Toshiba laptop for $600 and it still runs great.....knock on wood.
Today I can get a Toshiba laptop with better specs for ~$400.

I see no need to pay more....;)

It's actually a desktop replacement, and I'd like it to last 2-3 years without being too outdated hence why i'm spending a little more. I ended up parting most of the laptop minus the shell and screen. Does anyone here own a Sager notebook, or know anything of it? Thank you
