why are you still arguing about this? you are smoking banana leaves. You admitted that you bought them on the blackmarket, that means they are fake. there is no debate whether or not they are fake.

buying cigars on the 'black market' in cuba is like buying louis vuitton or gucci on 5th avenue or china town in new york. get over it, you've been had by a banana boy.
You must be smoking banana leaves to say that.

My friend's wife worked in a cigar shop. She checked them out herself.

How could it be propaganda?

If the authentic Cohiba's from the real factory are what they want to sell as real, then why would they not expose the fakes?

The old story that someones uncle or aunt or cousin smuggles out a few boxes each week is not real. The people who work at the cigar factories have (relatively) good jobs that they are not about to risk by stealing.

Like I said, enjoy the smoking but there is only a 2% chance of them being authentic. Given the standard cigar story you experienced is the very same that every fake cigar tout in Cuba uses, I'd say that there is no chance they are authentic Cohibas. Just like the Canal Street Louis Vuitton bags look good, they are just good phony/counterfiets.
How can it be propaganda? To dissuade tourists from buying the same product on the black market, but I will look further into this.

Why don't I give you and the rest of the naysayers 1 each to try.

Next thing you guys are gonna tell me is that the girls there are fake too, lol (no, I'm not marrying one but I suppose you can say there are a lot of women there with 'counterfeit intentions').

That's extremely generous of you. In that case, I absolutely deny the bona fides of your smokes. You bring the sticks, I'll bring the scotch.

LOL. YES!

btw, I don't know if your box is real or not and frankly it doesn't matter if you're enjoying the sticks. It's simply a matter of the probabilities. Given the popularity, price and circumstances of your acquisition, its more likely than not that they are fake. But, they could be real. It's like getting extra service at an MP. May not be likely, but it's possible! ;)

So basically, you're saying that this is just like the time the MPA told me that I was special and the only one she did this with?

Awwwwwww, f*ck.

Gentlemen, here's a pic of my box of Cohiba Maduro #5s complete with Instruction Certificate at the top, the Certificate of Authenticity with the Serial # in the middle, and the 'holographic' seal below. These were loose inside the box. The case is black and even the latch has a tiny circle embossed with Cohiba. The case was inside a cardboard shipping box. I stored the box in a cool wine & spirit room wrapped in plastic and now put them individually in my humidor. I also have a box of Esplendidos (light brown wooden box just like the one on the right hand side above).

One would think that since a lot of Cubans are on the take, that they can smuggle them out of those factories. So do we meet for drinks and test a few for banana flavour?

Lol. You should see my 'fake' girlfriend (she preferred to be called 'novia' not 'chica', heaven forbid!) - seriously, and very smart & classy too. If she were an escort here, she'd be a VIP. Oh hell, here she is but only her eyes *SIGH* for you vultures.

The SECOND time around, I think I paid 60 CUC!!!! We bought several boxes in total amongst three guys. I shared a 3rd box and gave most of those out & smoked a few.

GP is not the original poster in this thread who is attempting to sell cigars.

GP, the first few times I went to Cuba about 10 years ago, I also believed I had bought real cigars. Then I put the box side by side with a box at a government store and could see the difference. I had all the things you state, certificate, etc, however they were still fake. There are many ways to get the boxes, if someone works at a government store and they sell singles, the empty boxes and certificates could be given or sold to counterfeiters. A number of times in different cities, they have done the secretive box in the back room deal, because even getting caught with fake cigars costs them jail time.

Generally the Cohibas are made with the top leaf from the plant, other cigars from the lower leaves. It may be possible for workers to smuggle leaves or parts of leaves out and roll their counterfeits off site. If you are enjoying them, then you did ok. Many so called experts can't tell the difference and as long as they don't kill you, smoke em till you turn green!! ")

I will be honest, a good cigar is a good cigar.
Cubans are over priced for the product.

There are many internet sites where you can get some great sticks for a lot less.

Report: A leader of Cuba’s cigar industry arrested

A leader of Cuba’s lucrative cigar industry was arrested in August on graft charges, a British magazine disclosed this week.
By Juan O. Tamayo
jtamayo@elnuevoherald.com

Manuel Garcia, a long-time vice-president of Cuba’s cigar industry, has been arrested and 10 of his staffers may face trial for corruption, according to the British news magazine The Economist.

In a report posted Thursday on its Web site, the newsweekly reported Garcia, the No. 2 at Habanos S.A., has been in jail since August, “accused of mastermind graft on a grand scale.”

Cuban investigators believe Garcia and 10 of his staffers, “who also face trial,’’ were accepting bribes in exchange for selling Cuban cigars at a discount to black market distributors in the Caribbean, The Economist reported.

The report on Garcia’s previously unknown arrest, datelined in Havana, could not be independently confirmed late Thursday. Calls to the Habanos S.A. offices in the Cuban capital were not answered.

Garcia has headed Habanos, the Cuban state monopoly for commercializing cigars, for more than a decade and often acted as the host of mayor cigar events such as the annual cigar festival held in the Cuban capital.

Habanos is a 50-50 joint venture between the Cuban government-owned Cubatabaco and Altadis, a Spanish company owned by Imperial Tobacco, a British company.

The Economist reported that Imperial Tobacco has no comment on the Garcia case “but like the (Cuban) government, it will hope that the new management team at Habanos preserves the lucrative monopoly of Cuba’s most famous product.”

Habanos’ Web page says it was founded in 1994 to “market all Cuban tobacco products, both in Cuba and throughout the rest of the world.” It adds that the company now has a presence in more than 150 countries and that more than 90 percent of its revenues come from its “international business activity.”

Garcia’s case was only the latest in a lengthening string of alleged corruption scandals that have hit Cuba in the past few years.

Civil Aviation Institute President Rogelio Acevedo was fired amid an investigation into allegations that officials of the state-owned airline Cubana de Aviacion were pocketing the income from dozens of off-the-books cargo and passenger flights.

Pedro Alvarez, former head of Alimport, the state agency that handled billions of dollars in agricultural imports, defected rather than face state corruption investigators and is now reportedly living in Tampa.

Cuban authorities have asked for the extradition of Max Marambio, a Chilean Marxist and long-time friend of Fidel Castro, to face corruption charges in connection with three of his tourism and food processing companies in Cuba.

This girls just wasn't hot. She was soooooooo smooooooth (her skin too), intelligent and classy. I stopped going to clubs and chasing other girls when I met her. She was my novia every evening for the rest of my trip. Not just in the sac but dinner at their better restaurants and night caps in the hotel lounge. I should phone her today, damn!

I looked at them again. No spots. That's just a photographic artifact from my smartphone camera. Apparently, the dark colour comes from being dipped in cane sugar syrup or something like that, not shit my friend.

I bet you'd still like to try one. :p

I apologize to the OP if I've hijacked this thread people but hopefully bumping this thread will help him sell his. Consider his offer please gents, as I'm not selling mine.

Well, I've tried both kinds and they're the best I've ever tasted. My friends who smoke cigars, said they were not doubt Cohibas. I also checked the cigars at my hotel and the Airport, they looked the same, box and all.
