What do you guys do with the old CRT ("big back") PC monitors? Do you just leave them on the curb?
My company donated all our CRT monitors to a local charity. I'm sure there is a recycling place in Toronto where you can drop it off.

There is over 10 pounds of lead in a PC Monitor. It is not safe to leave it to the curb.

It has to be properly disassembled.

I use CRT's till this day (Professional Ones), as a graphic artist since Normal LCD's cannot compare in color reproduction.

This is interesting. Would a CRT also reproduce better JPEGs as well? How about the new high definition PC monitors? Any good?

It seems that the "coating" on my old CRT screen is rubbing off? Is this dangerous?

If you need to get rid of it please take it to your local hazardous waste depot. There the city will properly dispose of it for free.

You can look this up from your city's website.

The hazardous waste depots in Waterloo Region charge to dispose of electronics such as CRT’s, Computers, etc. That’s why you constantly see them at the curb, someone always takes them off your hands. One man’s garbage is ………………. I’ll be damned if I’ll pay to dispose of my old electronics, I pay taxes for garbage disposal.

And the Toronto website says to call ahead to determine the fee. So much for free.
That's just ridiculous. City of Toronto has really horrible waste management. They claim to be a green city yet they charge for a service that is free in most other places.

Up in Richmond Hill it's recycled for free so why is it that the same can't be done in Toronto?

Isn't there already a "disposal" tax imbedded in the price at the time you buy the machine?

Post it in the "free" section of CL, I bet someone will come and get it.
Thanks but I think there are enough "scavengers" patrolling the neighbourhood to take care of these things. They even took my old broken gas water heater this Spring.

They probably took that for scrap metal - it's amazing how much junk yards pay for that stuff.

Free enterprise at work. But, I heard that the drop in commodity prices have really hurt the savagening business.

It doesn't matter what you leave out, someone is gonna take it. If they don't, put it on CL and they'll race to your home to get it.

Donating it is a better idea though.

Not sure I want anybody on CL to know I live in the Bridal Path but I get your point.

Ofcourse it would. Professional CRT's support almost all of the color gamut of the NTSC specification.

What about high definition PC Monitors? The native resolution for any monitor is good to the human eye, there would be no extrapolation when we are talking LCD. For CRT it would vary.

Pixels really don't mean anything anymore when you get to a specific point.

For example, 35mm Motion Picture Cameras don't represent pixels, rather, lines, and can out due any Digital Video camera out there in the world. It's not just the specs, it's the look and feel. So pixels at one point, become irrelevant.

If we are talking about those widescreen 22" LCD monitors at Futureshop, with glossy coating, they're far from perfect. The sales guy job is to make it sound like it is.

Maybe I should hang on to my CRT monitor then. Yes?

If you can afford an LED Backlit or a LCD with IPS technology then I'd go there, but they're expensive and worth it. You get what you pay for, and some frugal people think the cheaper the better.

It depends on how good your CRT Monitor is. Is it a professional line of monitor? If it's just an average flat screen, with a good dot pitch, for clarity, then it's worth keeping. Still better than the average LCD for color accuracy IMO.
