It's an unfortunate reality in a Parliamentary system.

The party in government has the only tangible impact on a citizen of any riding. MP's are, for the most part, mere pawns. A collection of "ayes" and "nays" forced to tow the party line.
Not if they're doing their job right. John Nunziata voted against his party and should be praised for it. Garth Turner (joke though he was) was his own person. This guy in the 905 whose name I forget went against his party and worked with the conservatives because he knew it would be to the benefit of the country. Thats what MP's should do, and more importantly it's what the voters should want them to do.

I'm just pointing out the reality of the situation. With the prospect of a cabinet post leading to more money, power, prestige and a chauffeur, the vast majority of MP's are going to tow the line and avoid rocking the boat.

After what we've witnessed over the past few days, maybe it's time for another system anyway.

While I sympathize with your point of view it is not how it works in practice. By the fact that there are so few examples of non-partisan votes and voters it's evident that not many mp's agree with you.

I'm bringing this up again because with the petitions and GG's email being up for those who are against allowing this coalition to govern (I'm not) then I'd liketo suggest something else to those who want to do something. I'f your MP is a Liberal or in the NDP, email them and ask them to cross the floor and sit independantly. While I am fine with this coalition if everyone is on board, I want to KNOW that my MP is on board with it, and I think the rest of you do as well. So ask them to stand for what they believe. If they think this coalition is requiring to much compromise of party belief and policy we as voters should expect them to walk away. And if they don't, we can assume they're for it and whenever our next election is we can take that into account.

I was told earlier tonight that 26 MP's are thinking of crossing the floor. Notice I did not say 26 opposition MP's want to joint the government.

If the floor crossing does take place, it will be interesting to see just what the numbers will be.

More then I even thought. Very interesting

If no MP's cross I will be very dissapointed. There is no way all 310 MP's are in agreement with their parties on this.

I could see some Liberals with a brain and/or conscience (I know there must some of them) either crossing the floor or phoning in “sick” on voting day.

Some of them surely realize that this coalition is not what the people elected them to do and there will be a political fallout come next election.

The Bloc and NDP sure won’t cuz they got nothing to loose. This is there big chance to grab some power.

the big stick is that the party leader has to sign your paperwork to run for the party. Otherwise you run as an independant and have to make do with a back seat in the house no financial help etc.

The party whips are responsible for geting the vote out.

There is a very real possiblity of a fairly large nuber of M.P.s getting stuck in traffic on the way to the vote,. specifically Ignatiefs supporters he really does not like this deal and what it will do to the party fortunes going foreward.

i think if you change parties it should trigger an automatic byelection within 60 or 90 days. not controlled by the PM.
I can't argue with that logic. Wonders never cease, Liberals do have brain cells.
