Ok, we know that there are a lot of crooked businesses out there. Which ones do you think are the most crooked? I nominate home renovations. My friends and I have seen so many horror stories about home renos from no shows, cost overruns, shoddy workmanship and missed deadlines after missed deadlines. Close behind are auto mechanics and body shops.

I hear you... which is why I choose to do my OWN home reno's! I have a vested interest in the finished product and I know care and attention to detail will be strictly adhered to. As far as auto mechanics go... I replace my vehicle at about 80,000 clicks, so I don't worry too much about repairs. About the only thing I've had to replace are brake pads and tires as well as an oil change every 8,000 to 10,000 kms... Brake pads I can do myself and I have a good "tire guy", so no worries there.

Low priced equipment and tools from China are all over the place, I am fully equiped with paint sprayer, compressor and air tools. I just bought a biscuit cutter at Canadian Tire for $49.95 without having a use for it now. My tools and equipment have paid me back many times. I also lend it to my brothers for their homes. To have a trouble free car, buy a good quality car with a good reputation and get an extended warranty. You can get up to 8 years from the dealer. Even if you sell the car before the warranty is up the car is more desirable and will fetch more money when you sell it. I am sure that there are some honest mechanics , I know a crook that will use a hand ratchet when the client is around to extend the time of the repair. If the client is not there he will use his air ratchet and do the job in less than half the time, he will charge as much as he can get away with.
I seem to recall there have been several threads about crooked businesses. Currently, there is a thread about movers. Recently, there was a thread about "door to door" salespeople pretending to be Direct Energy. The worst in my book is still home renovations.
I guess politics doesn't count as a business?

you don't have to pay attention to the majority of your shareholders (think Harper, for one)
you get to make up rules as you go (think Harper senate appointments)
you get to be nasty to anyone (Helena Guergis?)
you don't even have to got to work to collect your pay (senate??)

Thanks to our not public auto insurance Province..... the government has given the auto Insurance RACKETS a license to ROB us all. Notice in Provinces with public auto insurance you pay basically half that of private auto insurance & YET the public auto Insurance is self sustaining.

to be honest most charities for every 1$ that gets donated 50-60cents gets sucked into admin fees and costs , if anything thats the most crooked at least when someones getting reno'd done they know they are getting pegged , but to donate to the heart and stroke or a cancer fund and find out more then 50% of your hard earned buck never makes it to where it has to must be discouraging .

Seriously, their monopoly where you can't get the medications you desire and are willing to pay for until they approve you to buy it - that's as crooked a set up as you are ever going to find. With habit forming and addictive medications, fair enough, but as most medications don't fall into that category, their monopoly is very self serving and unnecessary. But because its only the taxpayer getting hosed, it doesn't feel like they are ripping us off to the extent that they are. When Rogers/Bell do it, however, it feels like is done on a more individualized and personal level.
