Last I heard, on one of those scientific CBC Radio shows, was that it looks like the co-existence period is dramatically shorter than originally thought. Given that the world population of both groups probably listed in the thousands or tens of thousands at best it isn't that hard to see that if one group was seriously superior in an evolutionary sense that they could have caused a fast extinction.
