I think this agreement was made between Ferguson and Ronaldo last year.

AP.

Manchester United have accepted an £80m ($131.6m or 93.9m euro) offer from Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo's last game for United was the Champions League final defeat to Barca

A statement on the United website confirmed that a deal for the 24-year-old should be completed by the end of the month.

''Manchester United have received a world-record, unconditional offer of £80million for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.

''At Cristiano's request - who has again expressed his desire to leave - and after discussion with the player's representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player.

Wow. So this free's up some cash but for who? Does this mean Tevez will stay? Ribery? Valencia?

The last Galacticos era enjoyed only 1 CL win, this one has to contend with a stonger Barca. La Liga will be very interesting.

Interesting that 4 biggest transfer fees ever have been paid by Real Madrid.

CRon, Kaka, Zidane and Figo.

A question from a casual fan...The payment is from club to club for the player's contract right? What is Ronaldo's salary? I see him prancing around all over the world so I suspect it is large. Would it top Beckham's salary?

Correct, the payment is for the contract. However, a portion about 10%, goes to the player if the club sells his contract without the player requesting a transfer.

Beckham definitely and probably Ronaldo make much more from endorsements than their actual salaries, think Michael Jordan. However, currently I would guess that Ronaldo makes a higher playing salary than Beckham. My guess would be between 8-11 million Euros. But like I said, probably double that in endorsements, however the teams retains some image rights therefore they would get some negotiated portion of his endorsements.

As a Man U fan, I'm glad he's finally going elsewhere. I was getting tired of his act of one day he wants to stay and the next day he wants to leave. He's a talented player but to much of a distraction and also a bit of a poor sport as he's a flopper and they made a good decision to get the most they could get for him. I feel sorry for Real fans as this team is going to be a soap opera. To many big ego's to keep happy and this will be the downfall of this team. Barca. doesn't have this problem and that's why they will repeat as league champs. I hope all this money Real are spending blows up in their faces.

As a die hard Man U fan I agree. He was great while he was at Man U and helped collect a lot of trophies. However his time has come and if a player doesn't want to stay then it's time to let him go. I think Man U got maximum value for him and hopefully the cash will be put to good use.

And as predicted he'll get a increase in salary.

Real Madrid-bound winger Cristiano Ronaldo looks set to become one of the highest paid sports stars in the world.

A report in Friday's Times newspaper claims that although the player, who is set to complete a word record £80m move from Manchester United to Real by the end of the month, would initially earn £9.5m-a-year the contract would include a 25% increase season-on season.

The 24-year-old is expected to sign a six-year contract at the Bernabeu, which means by the final year he would be on £29m-a-year - or £557,000-a-week - which is reportedly 33 times what the average Spaniard earns. And this is in a country which is suffering from high unemployment of over 18%.

It means the player will pocket £107m over the length of his contract. But it would not put him in the top five of the sporting pay league, which is led by golfer Tiger Woods.

He could buy Newcastle. :p

He can't buy his way to world cup. What if Portugal doesn't qualify for the World Cup. Imagine the world's best football player not in the World Cup.

Exactly right LL. Portugal is most likely going no where, and a part of me will be glad. They don't deserve to go to the W.C.

This will be an interesting transfer. Does Ronaldo have the strength of will to be a success at Real Madrid, or will the pressure and fame finally distract him? Up to now, he has thrived on the controversy and condemnation he's attracted.

Only good thing about this transfer for me is that my club, Sporting, gets 5 million of the fee. ;)

Every player who is the core of a huge transfer like this always feels that HE is the one who has to be the Hero and show all he is worth every penny.

This is why "Galactico" thinking doesn't work. The team like this never gels due to the fact that: "that would be a really good pass to the other player but I think I can take the kick and get it in" syndrome.

The Real Madrid spending spree is in direct result to Barcelona pulling off a historic event: Copa del Rey, La Liga and Champions League. A La Liga first. No matter what Real Madrid does now, they'll NEVER be able to say that they have that place in history. Especially in a season where they won NOTHING! This is quite possibly the deepest most significant rivalry in UEFA going back to the Franco era, socio/cultural clashing, political/monarchal differences and national supremacy.

They are prisoners of their own history. So many years of winning, they feel they have to be The Best or nothing else will do. Their own Jail is the Palace they have built for themselves.

They are already facing a HUGE media and public backlash in in Europe since Spain is bordering on a 20% unemployment rate. It shows classic elitist, blind arrogance devoid of any consideration or outer observation.

They've done it before. At one time Raul, Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and Beckham were all on the pitch at once. They were not the powerhouse everyone thought they would be and have very little hardware to show for this era. Nothing at all like it was expected of them. And certainly not what Barca did this year.

Good Luck to them. Not using their academy, not building from within and just throwing money at a problem never gets the desired results.

I quite agree with you. I didn't mean to suggest that his personal success would mean Real would achieve their objectives. The Galactico policy is not smart if the objective is to win trophies. If you look at as a business, as Perez seems to, then it's the way to go.

Ronaldo has been a failure on our NT lately precisely because he tries to do it all on his own. He's a fantastic athlete, ridiculously skilled, but he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer. If he had Zidane's brain, he'd be utterly unstoppable.
