Credit Card Fraud

Has anyone noticed an increase in situations of credit card fraud in the last little while? I recently got a new credit card and, within literal weeks, had to cancel it due to fraud on the account (someone making unauthorized transactions). It seems like the fraudulent purchases were made through a phone. Are their fraudulent phone apps people have been using to steal this info/make fraudulent transactions? Is there any safeguards one can take to prevent these activities? How are these criminals doing these behaviors? The cc info is not linked to any of my google accounts, etc. I have literally no idea how they could of gotten my info.

Can you give me your credit card number? I'll run a check to see what is happening with it.

I'm not senile. Took my cc out to pay for goods/services maybe 5 times in total before someone made a fraudulent purchases....I don't get it.

How again is this an increase? It went up by 1 case? Yours?

I asked if anyone has noticed an increased frequency in credit card fraud related activity, not that there IS an increase in trends per se. I live in farm country and only ever seem to get card related issues when I go into the city. It's the 3rd time in the last 4 months. Very unusual.

Only takes 1 transaction for card info to be copied/cloned. Saw a recent report of the new inline scanners they are putting on top of POS systems, almost 100% invisible to even someone with a trained eye. That being said, over the years have had some cards compromised a few times but the CC companies were on top of it almost immediately and contacted me and reversed all charges.

That's not very encouraging to hear. Are there any precautions that can be taken to avoid being targeted by these scanners?

This is not indication of an increase. Use cash.

Of course it's an indication of an increase. The last time I've had fraud on the card was over 6 years ago. Having 3 cases within the last 4 month period IS an increase, which happened to coincide with me going into the city more often. I'm trying to figure out if I've just had a case of bad luck, been a victim of randomness or if others have noticed similar situations and what precautions they are taking to avoid falling victim.

I insert and enter pin, even when wave it is an option.
Does that mean these cloning tools are geared more towards those who tap with their card? I thought it was the other way around which is why I never inserted my card (unless it was a very large transaction over a certain dollar amount). I guess the banks don't offer cards which have the tap option turned off (i.e. you can only make purchases through inserting the card in a machine). Not sure if there is a way to turn off an aspect of the card (e.g. "tapping") to make the card immune to cloning, etc...

I do the enter and pin as a way to establish a pattern. I got CC frauded at the grocery store in Port Credit.
Then a few hours later 2 online grocery store orders in PQ.

I notified promptly, and it took a billing cycle to get refunded.
But me mentioning in the call to the card co that they should look- I pin every time.
Well they looked and said , yes you do. These two ones didn't. I guess we will look into this a bit faster.

Personally, I don't like the move Banks made to put Debit Cards on the VISA/MasterCard network.

It used to be Debit and Credit were separated. Now, if you have a VISA Debit card, your card can access the Interac Debit Network in Canada; the VISA Network Internationally; and the VISA Network for any other Card Not Present Transaction in Canada (Online or Phone).

VISA has a Zero Liability Policy for transactions that don't require a PIN; but when it is a VISA Debit transaction, those are funds that are taken directly out your Chequing Account.

You can't choose to opt out of VISA Debit, either. VISA Debit can be useful to people who can't obtain a Credit Card, or who don't want a Credit Card. But I already have a VISA Credit Card with my Bank; so why the hell do I need VISA Debit?

I do know that if you have a Debit Card, you can opt-out of the tap feature on request to your Bank; thereby forcing all transactions to require a PIN.

Not certain if you can do the same thing with your VISA or MasterCard.

This report didn't really cover that but I usually take a close look at the handheld POS machines they hand you at restaurants and stores. It seems more common for these rogue scanners to be installed at ATMs and gas station machines. That's where you need to be vigilant when using a CC. In the end, the best protection is the policy of your card holder and how proactive they are in detecting fraud.

You can turn off tap but have to request it at the branch for them to do so. Also might depend on who you bank with.

Also the scimmers are designed to capture info from the mag strip and capture pincode entered.

Happened to a friend in Miami over the weekend, just found out today. They were using her account to pay bills, etc.

I don't trust tapping and am wary of giving my credit card details to fly by night internet sellers. Even reputable sellers sometimes get hacked. The banks and the cc companies don't care.

Another option is to use Apple pay or equivalent electronic wallet apps. The Apple app assigns another number to your c/c and that is what is presented to the merchant's machine. I don't know the specifics but I suspect this greatly reduces the chance of someone fraudulently charging things to your actual c/c account.

Only a couple of times. Somebody in India used one to make a purchase. The worst one was UBER. Had to cancel my card and get a new one.
