In my view, the observations that you alluded to regarding young people and their attitude towards what some have referred to as the glorification of violence and gun use in Society today touchs close to the heart of the matter, Mr. Fantasiafan. The importance of good role models for young people in general might be something to consider further. One can't help but observe the prevalence of hand guns as a symbol of status, power, control, etc. within certain ethnic minority cultures, and the subsequent effect that that has on Society. Your observation on the poor shooting skills of the young punks that seem to be mostly involved in the gun violence here in the GTA(Greater Toronto Area)has been made by others as well. Sometimes, it's almost comical how gunfire is reported with as many as ten to twelve rounds being discharged only for a young punk to limp into a Hospital a couple of hours later with a bullet wound to his leg. Again, the deterrent factor in relation to gun crimes, or lack thereof, remains foremost in my mind. I can't agree with your view point regarding the private ownership of handguns however. Sport shooting, target shooting, private collecting, etc. are legitimate activities. In my view, the rights of law abiding citizens should not be negatively impacted by the criminal behaviour of a relatively small portion of Society. I have friends and acquaintances who argue that had a private citizen armed with a hand gun been present here in Toronto the day of the Boxing Day Shooting, then perhaps that private individual could have stopped the shooter who killed Jane Creba. An extreme point of view, I admit, however when our Justice system seems so out of touch with the reality of the now day to day problems that occur in the GTA, such perspectives may seem worth considering. Sincerely, Jon .
