Polio was actually much more prevalent in highly developed countries. The reason was because the residents in those countries never developed the higher level of immunity as those residents who lived in poorer less sanitary countries. Yes, don't keep your house too clean.
The Spaniards actually "weaponized" smallpox when they arrived in the New World because the indigenous people had no natural immunity to smallpox.
