Condolences to his family and friends.

Murdered while being robbed. Unfortunately, murder is very common in South Africa.

Corrie who?

If it hadn't had anything to do with South Africa and your opinion of this so called backwater country, it wouldn't have been posted on TERB

Saunders was not a world leader or a mover and a shaker in any aspect of life. He was a boxer that got a shot at the limelight, second choice by the way, and upset a champion who in short order got his crown back later.

Nice try.

Cornelius "Corrie" Johannes Sanders (7 January 1966 – 23 September 2012) was a South African former professional boxer. In 2003 he became the WBO heavyweight champion.

It was posted in the sports lounge and is a sports worthy piece of news. Sanders held a world heavyweight title for the briefest of periods. But he beat one of the Klitchko brothers and that is a big deal. I think he is the last guy to beat one of those monsters, and many men have tried since Sanders. I have met about 15 men that have held world boxing titles, including heavyweights like the late Jack Demsey, Muhammed Ali (when he was Cassius Clay) and the Swede Ingemar Johansson, who held the title for one fight only. Just like Sanders. Corrie Sanders is miles away from the class of great champions, but anyone that wins a world boxing title is noteworthy in the world of sports and the manner of his passing accentuates this.

Rockslinger, thanks for the post. I missed this on the news.

As a boxing fan and more you would appreciate it, but had RS not commented on the South African murder rate connection and just said he was murdered, his well known condescending stance on South African society would have slid by.

Fair enough blackrock. Good to see another boxing fan. In Canada the sport is almost a zero. But in the UK it is a huge sport. I boxed in the UK from the age of 6 until 20 and won an ABA title (under 18). Met a lot of great boxing champs and received much of my coaching from the 1956 Olympic gold medalist Dick Mctaggart and the late Sir Freddy Mills. They took a shine to me when I was about 11 and they were complete opposites in personality and boxing philosophies. Dick, the peerless defend and counter puncher, whereas Freddy was a warrior who constantly moved forward with malice. Freddy was world champ (light heavy) for two years, just a little before Rocky Marciano won the heavyweight title.

There is tremendous speculation that Freddy lived two lives. A loved public figure and entertainer after his retirement. He was knighted by the Queen. The other side is he very likely was a latter day Jack The Ripper who murdered eight women. See the link below. I have had conversations with old boxing cronies when I have returned to the UK, and as much as Freddy was my idol I believe that Freddy was the murderer. Hence his suicide.

My best boxing memory was meeting Jack Dempsey in NY in 1970. Apart from meeting the legend himself, we had a great chat. He recounted first hand stories of Jack Johnson, Jim Jeffries, and even Jim Corbert the man who beat John L Sullivan. I grew up loving boxing, but I could never learn enough about the history of the game. So it was a thrill of a lifetime to meet Dempsey and hear these amazing stories from him. He thought Joe Louis might have been the greatest, but he said that Ali was in the conversation.

My most over rated heavyweight champion? Rocky Marciano. He never beat a great heavyweight that was in his prime. The notable men that he beat were, on average, about 40 years old and WELL past their prime. Ezzard Charles, Jersey Joe Walcott, Joe Louis and Archie Moore. I subscribe to the school of thought that believes his 49-0 undefeated record was staged managed.

"Show me a fighter whose undefeated and I'll show you a fighter who hasn't fought anybody."

Not a big boxing fan, but there are some exceptions. How can you not be a fan when you see any of the Gotti vs Ward wars? Didn't believe the first time i watched them and it's hard not to now.

Boxers make very interesting human interest stories. One of my favourite is J.J. Braddock. Yes, I saw the movie "Cinderella Man" (filmed here in Toronto).

I think that Braddock went on to become a referee and ref'd several heavyweight world title bouts. He would have seen the fight in an interesting perspective having been the champ hinself.

Whatever your problem with Rock, maybe you could have picked a better time to 'take a shot' at him then a notification of someone's death.

If you don't know what the comments were referring to you might want to educated yourself first. His post had little to do with Corrie's death and more to do with his murder happening in South Africa, a nation he thinks is a country of savages with little hope and a future based on race.

No need. I read what he put, then your reply.
A man lost his life and you pretty much pissed on him further.

Nothing stands in the way of blackrock making his appointed rounds and making sure we all know what he thinks.

Attention Sargent Blackrock !

Just in case you just get the Star, the National Post carried a slightly greater than quarter page Obit today on Mr Sanders. After citing Mr Sanders accomplishments, including his WBO and WBU championships, the paper reports that he was shot in the stomach by robbers at a restaurant. The police believe the robbers shot randomly into the crowd but Sanders was the only victim. He retired in 2008 but remained a well liked and well respected sports figure in SA.

Apparently they haven't heard about the Blackrock ban on anything that could possibly reflect negatively on South Africa or the fact that they do have one of the highest murder rates in the 'civilized world". I think you should get right on this and write a stiff letter to the editor.
