I won't agree with you Dartsy, look at the strategies of Roger Smith and Gianni Agnelli. I could go into detail about this, instead I'll just pose the question.

"The government bailouts of Chrysler Group LLC and General Motors Co. saved 2.6 million jobs in the U.S. economy and hundreds of billions of dollars in personal income and government transfers, says a study of the unprecedented moves North American politicians made to save key parts of the auto industry in 2009."

Why is Detroit decayed while Torino thrives?

Not sure about Torino but Detroit's biggest problem was Japan building better cars that were selling at lower prices.

Ontario went through its worst recession in 1991 - 95, Toronto was hit hardest.

At the 95 Provincial Election, Mike Harris blamed the malaise on welfare cheats and single mothers. Colin Vaughan shot back that the underprivileged had to be pilloried to keep fat cats in Cohibas and Cognac.

I thought David Einhorn was a genius until he advised that GM was a good investment. Apart from the Toronto Maple Leafs, no company has had management as terribly as GM. What other company has sucked up so much public money?

What other company has sucked up so much public money?

Ford, Chrysler, all the big oil-consuming vehicle manufacturers are drowning in taxpayers' money. We have paid so much tax to these cunts in the form of gov subsidies they should be giving us vehicles for free.

I have no vested interest in North American auto companies. I have always said let them go belly up. So, the unions can then bitch about the loss of their high paying jobs. Maybe Mr. Singh and/or Mr. Trudeau (but not with taxpayer money) can give them jobs that pay over $100,000 a year.

I believe Air Canada received a huge chunk im just to lazy to find the link.
It wasn't "free" money/

1) Some of it was to refund ticket holders.
2) Some of it was debt owing to the Government of Canada
3) Some of it was selling an ownership stake to Mr. Trudeau.

Personally, I don't have a vested interested in Air Canada.
1) I didn't have any tickets to refund.
2) I don't know anybody who works for Air Canada.

I'm very disappointed our governments did nothing to prevent the demise of NORTEL and the near demise of RIM. I know some talented people from both companies have headed south. Our loss, the U.S.'s gain. Also, some people headed to Asia and Australia.

Instead we pour $billions into auto companies so that people who screw bolts into car frames continue to make over $100,000 a year.

Wait, I thought you were all for people making lots of money and not getting taxed.
Now you say you don''t want people making good money?
Why shouldn't they get paid?

Air Canada was very slow to repay tickets cancelled, layed off tons of workers and then used that government money to give their executives big bonuses.

Oblivion
The corporation must be kept alive by the Federal government to provide cover for the Bank of Canada to “print money” otherwise known as “quantitative easing” as many Central Banks and the US Treasury does. This keeps Canada’s bond rating satisfactory and allows Canada to not be a ward of the IMF like other nations. Canada would be closer to being a Banana Republic if we did not share a border with America.
Socialism eventual results in an equal sharing of misery and kills the entrepreneurial spirit. Anti-corporate governments like the NDP grow the nanny state and eventually run out of other peoples money to spend. They due not encourage hard work and survive by encouraging class welfare.

You cannot save an industry if the management is rotten to the core. Upper management at Nortel spent money like Roman Emperors - I know, they were one of my best customers. They looted the company then filed for bankruptcy, same thing happened to Valdy's Groceries who were giving the predatory Weston's a real scare. A common practice, Conrad Black looted the Dominion pension fund then left his mentor Michael Milken to his fate. This must be why he got the Order of Canada.

The NDP only talks about raising taxes and spending money. They have no clue on expanding the economy to create more wealth for our country.
