Coronavirus shutdowns have quashed nearly all other common viruses

"Veteran virus trackers say they are chronicling something never before seen — the suppression of virtually every common respiratory and gastrointestinal virus besides the novel coronavirus. They theorize that is largely due to global shutdowns, mask-wearing and a host of other health protocols aimed at stemming the spread of the coronavirus.

These other viruses — including influenza A, influenza B, parainfluenza, norovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus — all appear to be circulating at or near levels lower than ever previously measured. The same is true for the respiratory bacteria that cause pertussis, better known as whooping cough, and pneumonia.

A very interesting side effect of isolating.

No joke, when covid is over, we should consider doing a 2 or 3 week shutdown every year to keep us healthier. Sometime during the winter would be less intrusive.

This is a revelation? I would think it's common sense.

I thought it was weird last fall when they were pushing the flu vaccine to avoid a double pandemic. Double plus so when I found out the flu has an R0 of under 2, less than the Covid so anything that keeps covid to a dull roar would be enough to MDK the flu. And it has. I still go the flu shot, I mean it's free and safe and I do it every other year so meh but I thought it was a bit of a waste.

I almost always get a cold that last a while with after effects. Glad it didn't happen this year. I'll probably keep masking up for future cold and flu seasons.

This is completely false. Look up viral interference. It had nothing to do with shutdowns 😂

100% fake news.

Back at the end of February, my work did a sick leave payout for 2020.
All but two got full payouts, the other two took days during the fall totaling only 6o lost hours for the entire year, resulting in increased productivity as found by the profits for 2020.
Management did a 1 year trial of paid sick leave about 18 years ago whereby everyone received 70 hours paid sick leave with no doctors note necessary, any hours not used at the end of the year were paid out at time and a half.
After this trial, it has been in effect ever since, it was found that by workers staying home when sick other workers didn't catch what they had and time off due to sickness dropped over 80% in that first year.
Productivity remained high and drastically increased the bottom line.
The lowest total hours for sickness used for the year in the past was in 2015 at 274 hours.

There is an important research paper that came out in 2020 that suggest that once an innate immune system is activated by one pathogen, the body can repel another one.

But that cannot be the only reason. Because that would suggest that only ppl that got covid fought off the flu? No it doesn't make sense. It as to be related to the fact that we are isolating, wearing a mask and washing our hands 15 times a day.

What. Keeping people apart reduces the spread of a contagious respiratory disease? I donno man. That sounds like Nazi Communism to me.

Nonsense. And BTW the article already mentioned "viral interference":

"Social distancing is probably not the only factor suppressing endemic pathogens. Walgreens, for instance, has seen “unprecedented demand” for flu vaccine shots this season, according to Kevin Ban, chief medical officer of the pharmacy chain.

Vaccines, unfortunately, are not available for most other viruses. But another powerful factor, called viral interference, could also play an important role in limiting infections. In a paper published Oct. 1 in the Lancet Microbe, Ellen Foxman of Yale University reported that a prior rhinovirus infection greatly reduces the chances of contracting influenza A. The reason, she found, is that infection with one virus prompts the body’s immune system to release interferon, which blocks replication of all viruses.

“The interferon response is one of the body’s best defenses against respiratory viruses,” Foxman said. “As soon as it gets turned on by one virus, any other virus that comes along and tries to grow in the respiratory tract can’t.”

The body’s response to SARS-CoV-2, in other words, could be blocking the spread of other viruses. Its response to other pathogens might produce similar protection: Foxman points to temporary breaks in the spread of influenza during the 1918 pandemic, as well as during the 2009 H1N1 swine flu pandemic, as possibly due to viral interference from rhinovirus.

Viral interference could also help explain a deep mystery about the coronavirus: why so few children are getting severely sick from it. As it happens, one of the only endemic viruses still circulating widely now is rhinovirus, which typically causes the common cold. And according to Meyers, who cited a recent paper in The Lancet, “Rhinovirus is circulating only in pediatric populations. It’s been wiped out in adults during school closures.”
Those who read it would have known that ;

There are things more important than the hobby. Those antigens do not die after a few weeks. They remain in the body. You could shut down the industry for a year and once it starts back up the rate of infection would be the exact same. So it is not a valid comparison.

If you know it all, why didn't you think of that?

Can you find me that paper? (Is it the Lancet microbe one?)
