The cop was correct. What if the guy was a terrorist and was going to put those Mentos into a bottle of Diet Coke.

Just image what would have happened if he bought two packs of Mentos.... mind blown.... literally.

I like how the cop acts like a tough guy questioning (more like lecturing) the clerk if the guy actually bought it.

Amazing what this world has become..... a guy suspected of robbing a pack of Mentos and a cop goes apeshit with gun drawn.

And cops wonder why they can be perceived as trigger happy assholes.

These things are obviously rare but it's the kind of behavior that one would never believe if it weren't for video.

For a minute I thought the cop would tell the Asian clerk he's lying and pull a gun on him too.

I wouldn't have believed he was a real cop. Gun in his pocket, struggling to get it out. He seemed like a bumbling idiot on a power trip.

I'm curious, if you were the cop and had thought the man had stolen something, what would you have done? I wonder what SOP is for that police force?

I would have thought that the cop would identify himself, put his hand into his sweater and gripped his weapon, instruct the man to put his hands on the counter and ask questions.

I have greater faith that the cop would be able to manage the use of his weapon, than the scenario if he only verbally confronted the man and the man had a hidden weapon or quickly attacked. Sure, scary for the man and the clerk, but the cop never pointed the gun, kept his finger off the trigger, nor became overly aggressive. He definitely could have done a better job identifying himself.

No question this cop should be fired. What type of judgement does he have when it comes to assessing a situation? Clearly none. What evidence or indication was there that a crime was being committed? Was the clerk acting strange or indicating something? No. Was there anything strange going on that any of us seeing the video would think there was a crime taking place? No. All the officer had to do was ask the clerk "Hey buddy - how's it going?" and gotten a response and used that to determine if the clerk was being held up.

Exactly.

It was a pack of Mentos and it's not like the situation was a stereotypical heart pounding robbery with a crook pulling out a gun, jumping at the clerk, emptying the cash register and making a run for it.

It was a guy and a clerk acting normal at the counter doing a transaction.

Yet meathead cop goes apeshit thinking this calm situation deserves pulling out a gun and screaming thinking he's Rambo.

The fact it was Mentos is besides the fact, since I will assume the cop didn't see what it was and thought the guy pocketed something. However, if the cop actually saw it was candy and still decided to get mad, that makes it even dumber (and funnier).

For candy. Even if he did in fact steal it, does that warrant a weapon being drawn?

At least he didn't tackled or shot, and left with just his heart probably pounding at a crazy rate.

I really didn't care much for the original video. It was obviously heavily edited and the third man from 0:14 - 0:20 magically disappeared just before the cop pulled his gun. I found it suspicious.

Here's a better video (although still obviously edited): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7sJqJv0wns

I can't imagine why the cop believed Joe Arreola did anything wrong. The cop was directly behind Jose Arreola when the money was paid and the cop was looking down sorting his own money .... so I wonder what triggered the cop's reaction? Arreola was a little bit fidgety and eyed the cop a little, but not unreasonably so and he didn't appear hostile or giving visual attitude. Generally I like to give cops the benefit of the doubt, better to be a bit over-controlling and aggressive and avoid being on the wrong side of a situation. but I agree this cop over-reacted.

No further news updates yet.

The cop was off duty. In other words Joe Citizen. None of his business.
I'd hate to see him on duty. Either he needs therapy or a long vacation.

Even in murica i don't think you can randomly pull a gun on someone without consequence. Why would a cop be carrying in his pocket?
