I think Dr. Rice is a very capable person who has the trust of the President. She has also inherited a department with 29,000 people in it, most of which wish they were working for another president.
These will not be easy times to be heading the State Department, but there are incredible opportunities on the horizon as well. If Palestine is established on her watch, North Korea Iran are contained without a shot being fired you would have to give her high marks.
Graduated collage at 19, professor at 26, fluent Russian, concert pianist and this is the second President she has served. She may be over her head but she's got a running start at it.

Give the lady a chance. Man I am glad I don't have to work for you. Don't you ever see potential in a person and give him a chance to prove himself/herself? She certainly has the brains and the stamina to pull it off.
Do you seriously believe than 4 years of any presidency can cause irrepairable damage? Don't ypu have any faith in our system of checks and balance? If things really would get out of hand, which I doubt they will, don't you think that the power and the weill of the people will prevail?
Your discontend for the current administration clouds your judgement of the strength of our democracy.
The USA is not a banana republic where a ruler can act at will.

I recently watched a German language documentary about the reunification of Germany. It was released in 2000, thus before GWB was election president and before Dr. Rice was a national figure as a result of the September 11, 2001 aftermath. Thus her rôle in the current Bush administration did not cloud the filmmakers' view of her. From 1989-1993 she was a key advisor to President Bush Sr. on Soviet/Russian affairs, specifically dealing with the crumbling of the Iron Curtain, the reunification of Germany and the dissolution of the USSR. Her rôle in these matters was portrayed very favourably.
Colin Powell was an ineffective Secretary of State, not because of any lack of competence, but rather because everyone in the whole world knew that his views counted for nothing in Washington. Rice will carry much more weight in foreign capitals as it is known that her views coincide with those of the President.

That is the whole point! Dick and Bush want to surround themselves with sycophants. They are NEVER wrong. They have implied it many times. And now they have a "mandate", so watch out! Hubris leads to underestimations and miscalculations. Unfortunately the American people are the ones who pay the biggest price. But they only have themselves to blame.
