When I go to google and start to type something in the search bar it automatically shows a drop down with matches to what I am typing. How can I stop that from happening?

turn off auto complete
Tools > Internet Options > Content > Auto Complete
on that same field you can clear autocomplete entries as well

Thank you GB, I almost had a heart attack as I allowed someone to use my computer and they are seeing where I've been.

I suggest you try the web browser opera. It is much better than IE (and faster), and includes a handy 'delete private data' option that instantly gets rid of your history, drop down lists, passwords, cache, and so on.

The only way to clear the google toolbar history is the following:

1. open registry editor (start-run-type "regedit" and press enter

2. navigate to the registry key hkey_current_user, software, google, NavClient, 1.1, history

3. Delete the history on the right hand side.

You can also just highlight the first one.. then hit the delete button. You can delete one or all of them.. whatever you like.

History doesnt clear the dropdown autocomplete....

Is there any way you can erase the autocomplete?
This takes care of the autocomplete, Sheik:

You can also delete the history, clear the cookies, and clear the temporary internet files. You have to have 'show hidden files and folders' enabled in My Computer ->Tools-> Folder Options -> View tab to see the temporary internet files folder, located in the local settings folder.

Thanks all...

Great tips and advice!!

Thanks all for contributing. We really need to put these things together in one place and have it pinned.

Wooly110 did a really good job some months ago about tips for the hobbyist WRT hiding hobby activities from the SO and others. It was extremely informative and gave lots of good advice.

I clear my history every day yet anytime I type in a website into the address bar I get a drop down list of all the other sites I`ve visited with similar wording. For example, if I was to type an address in like "termites.com", then https://terb.cc would drop down from the address bar as I was typing in "ter..".
It appears that the entries that remain in my drop down after clearing history are files and folders on the computer, and from my favourites list

Is there anyway to clear the drop downs that occur on the address bar or is clearing the auto complete through the internet options function the way to do that as well?
If you change your Autocomplete Settings as below this will take care of the drop downs that occur on the address bar.

Under AUTOCOMPLETE SETTINGS deselect:

-web addresses
-Forms
-user names and passwords

Maybe I'm a retard but I've deselected everything and I still get drop downs. Oh well, if my new lady finds where I surf to I'll just have to deal with it.
Edit the registry as per my instructions above and that will get rid of the drop downs.

If you have Google toolbar installed, all you have to do is left click on "Google". This opens a drop down menu that contains "Clear search history". Left click on it, and POOF!!

You have to do this even if Autocomplete is disabled.

Whoa Avery, that was simple, and here I was editing my registry. Learn something new every day, thanks.
