I am getting ready to purchase a laptop. My question is, what do you guys think is the best one. I am going to be using it for schoolwork and checking out TERB. I will not be downloading music, but I will want to play DVD's and maybe put some music on it to download onto my iPOD. I am looking for something light also. Okay computer geniuses, hit me with your opinions. Mac afficianados need not apply, I do NOT want a mac. Thanks!!!

Here and there
Hi Lil'Miss...

If you want light AND tiny, try a Fujitsu lifebook.
I can't compare it to others, as it's the only laptop I've had, but I love it !

Cheers... :)

Depends on what your price range is?

Check out Dell, HP/Compaq, Tablet PCs.

I would suggest that you buy from a credible vendor with a reputation for customer/technical support. At the end of the day, the difference between one system and another with the same specs is reliability. Personally, I only ever buy from IBM and/or Dell as they have great reputations for service.

I have had no problems at all with the three Dells I manage at work. I use a Toshiba Satellite for home use, but it is a bit heavier than you may want.

My top 3 choices would be IBM, Toshiba and Dell.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I'll let you know what I decide.
Winston: I have the windows version of the iPOD, the ibooks are nice, but not what I'm looking for.

I would recommend staying away from Dell for the time being. My last 3 computer purchases have been from them, and while the first two were great decisions, the latest one (this summer) was far from it.

Customer service & support has really gone downhill at Dell recently. They've gone from being my favorite company to deal with to my absolute least favorite. Ridiculously long wait times for phone support (even at 3am), 7-10 day waits for email support, reps who have no idea what they're talking about and will transfer you from one department to another (with 60+ minute wait times in between each transfer) and the list goes on.

I'm still trying to have a defective subwoofer returned that I bought way back in August.

Their support forums are full of stories from people who've been experiencing the same thing. YMMV, but I won't be buying another Dell machine anytime soon.

ok i would honestly get a Sony if not a Powerbook or ibook. I use macs all the time for work and i do own a pc laptop and it is a Sony. There is also a hack for the ipod to use the windows version on the mac :p
I love my Ipods i have 3 i use for music work video everything, even works as a boot disk.
Sony :)
You could always install Linux on it too

instead of buying, no matter which option you choose you may want to see if there is an potential to lease

what are your budget
if you have money, i would suggest IBM T series
it's light compare to all ibm T eries 1"slim, 4.3lb and dvd/cdrw built-in too
Titianium cover is always better then plastic cover (that cheap feeling, after you dump thousand dollar in, i hate plastic)

also important factor for me
IBM T series is very quiet. where Dell, toshiba,sony...etc were very loud.

if you want PM me
i can give you IBM employee website and access code
you can get 20% off buying direct from IBM

OK,

The most important thing is to Carefully chose your screen...as this is one of the only things you cannot eventually replace/upgrade.
Make sure capabilities are expandable if ever you want to upgrade Memory or other.
Get a Laptop with Removable Battery and FFloppy (That way, if on a Trip you can have several Batteries with you and time spent on your laptop last longer)

Try looking at Sony, they have a smaller and lighter weight one but not sure of price. Dell has one at $1000 thats not bad either and they have improved on their reliability and at a $1000 you can't go wrong. Or at least till you hit the Terb site then all hell breaks lose. :) lol Toshiba's i have gone through 2 of them and screen issues are the big problem.

get a Dell there is always some deal in the newspapers. haggle I did and it saved me $100. IBM are good but too overpriced and their reliability is not much more highly overrated.

I bought a Dell laptop, very high end and previously had a toshiba that last 4 years.
